n.d. hang in there. I came down with GBS last year in May. I was like you, by the 6th week I was wondering why I’m not healing as fast as I thought I would. It will happen, you just gotta believe and keep working at getting better. Don’t give up. I am now back to work. I’m about 85% and I know I will get even better. It’s a slow process so HANG IN THERE!!!

    Aloha everyone!!

Good news! My first week back at work and I get a call from Social Security. The person told me that my application was approved!!! I told them that I just returned to work and the person asked me if I still wanted to collect disability social security. I told her “No, I want to work!” She told me ok but I qualified for retro-active pay so was given 3 months back pay. She told me she will keep my case open just in case later I find out I can’t keep up with my work.

Aloha everone, I’m back to work! I started working again last week. The numbness in both feet are still there but has gotten better. I’m able to tolerate standing for longer periods at a time.

My primary physician told me not to take the flu shots while my neurologist basically gave me that damn if you do damn if you don’t option. I’m going to pass on the flu shots this year since it’s too soon after my bout with GBS.

Do you know if coming down with the flu will trigger the GBS?

Thanks GH, I wouldn’t want to go through that hell again.

How can I tell if I have GBS or CIDP? At 2 weeks into my GBS I had to be intubated for 9 days and I hit maximum progression (completely paralyzed from my neck down) between 4-5 weeks. How soon, if I was to have CIDP, would a relapse happen? I’m 5 months into my GBS and walking without any type of walking device.

Hi Josh, early into my GBS I too had difficulty falling to sleep and staying asleep for more than 2 hours at a time. But it does get better. Take care.

Harry, I have GBS and not CIDP. Been off from work since mid-May. I too work in the construction industry but don’t do the physical labor type work you do. I’m a safety consultant and do more inspection type work than manual labor but I still need to be able to climb ladders, scaffolding, and into manholes. My knees are still kind of weak. I’m aiming for Jan 2014. Hope you recover so you can go back to work. Staying home sucks.

GH, thanks for your response. Although I applied for SS disability, I’m too far out from retiring (57) and doubt my request will be granted. Besides, I want to go back to work since I got too many bills to pay. My TDI ruNs out in November. I don’t have long term disability. If I’m not ready to return to work, will I be able to collect unemployment?

Thanks fairly_odd_mother for your response. The tightness around my chest is gone but the numbness in both hands and feet is still there. As far as the tingling sensations, it’s not so much tingling but rather more like hypersensitivity. If I don’t move my hands or feet, I don’t feel any tingling. My hands feel normal. However, when I touch or handle something with my hands or take a step with my feet, it is then I feel the needle like sensation. If I was to step on a grain of rice with bare feet, it feels like I stepped on a shard of glass. I do see some major improvements in my hands and feet. I’m going on my 5th month come Oct 11th and just 3 months ago both my hands and feet felt like they were filled with pressure and going to explode. Now, there’s no pressure present and the numbness has trickled down only in the fingers. I’m in the process of writing my journal just to remind me how precious life really is. How we should never take ordinary things we do daily in our lives for granted.

Jim, I live and work in Hawaii. According to the Social Security person my wife spoke to, any benefits I receive now will be deducted later when I do retire. I do hope to get better to allow me to go back to work.

I work in the construction industry and my work requires me to do a lot of walking, climbing up and down ladders, stairs and scaffolding. Also, I’m required to enter into trenches and manholes. All to do inspections. As you all know, the grounds on construction sites are not always, in fact never stable. My ankles, knees and legs are still weak. My grip is still far from normal. Last and most important, I’m having trouble with balance. I want to eventually go back to work when this thing heals so ill be filing for Temp Disability.

GH, diaphragm tightness went away about a month ago. Still got the numbness and tingling in my hands and feet but not as severe. I know it’s still early since coming down with GBS so I’m praying that it too will eventually subside.
