GBS triggered by COVID19 – is it ok to get COVID19 vaccine?

    • August 17, 2021 at 10:18 pm

My dad developed stage 4 GBS two weeks after mild case of  COVID19 in late 2020. He responded well to plasma exchange treatment and is about 90% recovered by now.

Is it safe for him to receive a COVID vaccine? Since my dad’s GBS has been triggered by COVID19 virus, there is  a concern that COVID19 antigen in the vaccine could trigger another episode of GBS. Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks!

      Covid 19 Vaccine

      Hi Jim,

thanks so much for such a prompt response! I did read the discussion on COVID19 Vaccine. Vaccination seems to be recommended for GBS patients. My concern is mostly due to the fact that my dad’s GBS has been triggered by COVID19 itself. Is he more likely to react to COVID vaccine since his GBS has been triggered by COVID?

      Thanks!

Which vaccine triggered the Covid? J&J and AstraZeneca are the most risky. The two mRNA vaccines are much less likely to trigger GBS symptoms.
