Found some interesting news on rss feed today . . .Current clinical trials initiation of topical perscription cream for effective, long term relief of peripheral nerve pain.

It appeared “promising”, so I did a quick search, and found that some doctors prescribe a compounded gel/cream. PubMed has a review of the efficacy and safety of such a compound here:
