Need a neurologist in New York City

You’d figure that would be easy, right?

Anyway, back when I first got sick in 1994 I had a great neuro–Dr. Robert Lovelace at Columbia-Presbyterian. He’s since retired, and I didn’t have too much of a rapport with his replacement. I let it go for a whole because I was pretty healthy and everything was being controlled by pred prescribed by my regular GP.

Then I had a flare up and saw someone at the Weill Center, and that didn’t go well at all. He tried to ween me off the pred while starting me on IVIG, and within a few days I could barely walk anymore. The doctor, and every other neuro in the center, according to the receptionist, was at a conference and could not be contacted. Can you imagine having patients in active treatment and not leaving contact instructions? I went back up on my pred on my own, finished the IVIG (which did nothing) and stayed on a high dosage of pred for 6 weeks. Basically, I treated myself. I did see the neuro when he got back and he was very concerned and pretty surprised at how quickly I got worse, but I think my faith in him was pretty much destroyed.

Anyway, long story to say I’m having very bad symptoms and I think I need to see a neuro–any recs? My GP has no recs–he thinks I should see some guy who specializes in MS. I don’t think that will go well. In NYC they all seem to like to stick to their specialties.

      Thanks! Marie

I went to see Dr Stanley Meyers at Columbia. He specializes in GBS, I do not know if he is a neuro, but he seemed to know what he was talking about, unlike the neuros here in NJ.

Just a warning, his secretaries that answer the phones are less than friendly!

I used to live in New York (central Long Island) and moved to Florida a few months ago. New York City was too far for me to go for a doctor, but I saw Dr. Dale Lange (Mt. Sinai) one time for a consultation and kn ow he is good and I’ve heard that Dr. Russel Chin (peripheral neuropathy center) is very good. Some of us with CIDP are in wheelchairs and what I look for which indicates a good doctor is auto doors and ramps.
