Great pix, guys. Can’t wait to get back to take new pictures of our granddaughter. She must have grown since we last seen her 2 months ago.
Here some photos of Laos kids we saw in the streets of Luang Prabang.
I take photos of kids having fun when I see them while on a photo shoot. If I were near my grandkids they’d have a camera pointed at them constantly!
Understandable, Ken – very understandable. They are so adorable: one angel (looks a little like her grandmother, doesn’t she? ) and one little trickster, I bet she’s a handful, but one who can get away with almost anything.
Give them a hug all the way from a Norwegian lady who is going to be a grandmother in a month’s time:

“Little-Bit” was so adorable, Ken, I’m so sorry she had such a short life. She obviously had some Abyssinian genes in her, because Abyssinians are the only breed who has mulitcoulored hairs in their fur. It is so easy to see on the photo of “Little-Bit”.
Thank you for giving me an excuse to post a picture of our Mosse. She is very small, only abt 4lbs, but otherwise perfect;)

If you look at the flowerpot to the right for comparison, you can see how small she is (she was 6 years at the time the photo was taken).

Thanks Allaug! She’s beautiful, and what a great coat! I really like small cats!
When Little-Bit was a kitten she really looked Abyssinian…..she was always tiny.
Years ago I had two Burmese litter-mates male & female that were really tiny too.
Then I had a huge male Tonkinese….and what a cat he was!

Prasert (behind right), one of our Karen friends from Thailand, just sent us this photo of his family in their traditional ethnic clothes. He is the one who recruited us into the program teaching refugees five years ago. Karen are one of the many ethnic minorities in Burma. Karen State used to be independent until the British left. Many Karens live now in Thailand as refugees, mostly in huge camps along the border.

Can I use the word “serendipity”?
And Norb, you know what the Norwegian Refugee’s Authority did? They got a group of Karen people on therir hands, and since all refugees are entitled to get lessons helping them with their mother tongue, they were given lessons in Burmese – and that it was a mistake wasn’t discovered until 6 months had passed! Embarrassing….

I have tons of really great pictures! I am just too, well, stupid, to figure out how to get them here. I am going to have my son show me how soon! I love everyones pictures, they tell who you are and let us see the world from different perspectives. I look forward to checking for new ones. Maybe someone could start some sort of an assignment of sorts, come up with a topic, say lines for example and see everyones interpretation? OK, I am getting carried away! Here is the definition I found: Alms or almsgiving exists in a number of religions. In general, it involves giving materially to another as an act of religious virtue. In Buddhism, alms are given by lay people to monks to nurture laic virtue, merit and blessings and to ensure monastic continuity.
Here in the US it wouldn’t work for monks to go out on the street with their begging bowls. Instead, it happens on the temple grounds. Here is a picture of my granddaughter putting a dollar in each monk’s bag. This was at the Thai Buddhawararan temple in Denver on Visahkha Bucha day, one of the most important holidays in Buddhism..

I haven’t been in here for a while, so it was such a thrill to see all the “new” pictures, and with such a wide range of motifs!
I guess you think I have nothing but pic’s of Wee William, but at last I have another nice one that I want to share. My problem is that – perhaps I’ve told you before – I can’t take my own pictures, so I have to wait for hubby to take them, get them transferred to his computer and then to mine, so it can take quite a while from he takes them to I’m able to share the nicest ones.

My daughter Kirsty is 15 and Aiden is 5. The age difference wasnt anything I had any control over, however I now realize some of the advantages of having such a big age gap. Only problem is …… with Kirsty all the teachers were my age or older, with Aiden, most of the teachers and mothers are so much younger than myself :p .

Norb,
We took some friends of ours from the UK to Intercourse a couple of years ago – actually the main attraction was Thomas the Tank Engine in Strasburg. We had a wonderful time, stayed in a guest house called “Das Haus” in Intercourse. Walked to the little stores on Sunday morning to buy fresh bread and jams for breakfast, good trip all round, lovely town.

Intercourse has become very touristy but it still can be an enchanted place. My son lives on a side road, not much traffic there. At night lying in bed hearing the clip-clap of horses pulling a black carriage I felt like being transported back to another century. His neighbor is Amish. At night I only saw the dim flickering lights of lanterns through the window. No electricity.

Oh, yes, you’d be more than welcome – and the scenery is not too bad either! This picture is from the village near by, Lyngoer, which was voted Europe’s best kept village sometime in the 80’ies. I have more or less distant relatives in almost every house. In the background you can see the mainland with vacation apartments (for the less fortunate!).

Okay, I’ll add a photo to this thread……..
Last Friday I met with two other photographers for lunch at Sam’s Barbeque in San Jose, California.
My friend “Uncle” Frank Richardson took this photo of me while we talked photography and enjoyed award winning BBQ. (The second photo is BBQ that I took last April at another one of our meetings.

Thanks for all the nice photos, Ken – and hubby is quite envious of you, Jim, he is really an old planes’ buff; I’m more into lions myself, and if I hadn’t known better, I’d flung myself ’round the old “cuddly King’s” neck right away. You don’t look so bad yourself, Ken:D !
The best time to experience the sights, sounds and tastes of Norway is right now, even if we’ve had quite a dreary summer weatherwise. So don’t delay Cheryl and Ali, Ken and Jim and “Tom, Dick and Harry” – go order your flights right away!
I wanted to put a picture here, but couldn’t connect to my photo-base, so it’ll have to wait.

Thank you, Ali – I guess I would have to spend a year making the Grand Tour of the US from New York to California – and then I would have to skip all my relatives in Illinois and Wisconsin!
There is one thing you still don’t know, though, and that is that I haven’t posted one single photo from the parts of Norway that are the real tourist magnets: the mountains and fiords of the western part of my country. I have quite a lot of them from our private trips, but they are “old-fashioned” paper copies, so I’ll have to scan them (well, first of all: find them!) before I can share them here. One day I will, and THEN you’ll be beside yourselves with “the Norwegian Fever”! So brace yourselves: “You ain’t seen nothing yet……”:D

Love that lion photo, Ken. And I bet you guys had a great time in Greece, Ali. Good looking family, nice to finally see a picture of you and your hubby.
OK, Allaug, nice picture. Was I included in the invitation under “Tom, Dick and Harry”? ๐ Never been to Scandinavia but for the time being I’ll take a raincheck. In the meantime some US attractions: the Rocky Mountains and hidden away there – only 45 minutes from here – a piece of Asia, a Tibetan Buddhist stupa and meditation center, something you’d never expect in the mountains away from civilization. The stupa is 108 feet, and the golden Buddha inside is 20 feet tall (that’s me on the lower right ). Decorations on ceiling, walls and floor are stunning. The last picture is not mine but shows a better view. I took a similar one but couldn’t find it.

I see a lot has been going on here since my last visit – I’ve been rather – nicely – busy, among other things going to introduce William to his great-grandmother in Moss, a small town by the Oslo fjord where hubby grew up. It’s an hour’s drive from where we live. Before we went home, we had dinner at an outdoor restaurant.

I just spent 4 hours trying to get approved for medicaid, only to find out I don’t qualify!!!! Does this sound familiar to anyone else?
I am perm disabled, was a state employee until GBS Aug 05, receive disability from a state retirement system, Not much but its something and I’m married. I was told we make too much to qualify for medicaid-even though my husband was laid off last month and gets a small weekly unemployment check. We qualify for food allowance, just over $100, and kids(2) are now covered by medicaid, but I can’t get it because I’m married and we make almost $200 over the limit.
Since I was a state employee, and I applied for disability through my job, I am now being forced to file for ssdi, which, if I qualify for would put us over the limit for the 2nd medicaid coverage and raise our income over the food allowance limit. The retirement system, that is paying my disability benefits, is alot harder to get approval for then ssdi is. If you were in this predictament would you go ahead with all the hassle and stress of going through ssdi, or would you just wait and hope for the relapses to hold off until health insurance is obtainable? We can not afford the $1000 a month for Cobra, can’t afford to pay out of pocket for appts or tests or self pay insurance plans. Money is extremely tight. Any and all suggestions are appreciated! and the timing of all this couldn’t be worse-I have an appointment that I’ve been hoping for at the University of Michigan on the 20th-for a possible dx-Finally!!.
Thanks for letting me vent and hopefully see this situation through others’ eyes. Take care Everyone. -

On my island there are no cars or bikes, if you want to get from one place to another, you have to walk. This is a photo to give a little glimpse of the road\path through the woods we have to go to reach the old shool-house (abt 1.5 miles from where I live) and to the other “village” at the western end of the island (abt 3 miles).

The picture was taken on a foggy day, with the sun coming through now and then. That’s why the colors are a little gray.
Picture yourselves on the road, walking slowly and taking in the fresh air and the smells of the wood itself, and your blood-pressure will drop instantly!

We had a chance to see the nature effects of the smoke from the California fires last night. Here is a shot at sunset. The weathermen say we had this beautiful sunset because as the sun was setting it reflected through the smoke of the fires and in turn gave us a glimpse of natures’ wonders.

To-day I have the great honour and pleasure of presenting my first selfmade picture on an e-camera!
I bought myself a (this is especially for Ken-L) Panasonic DMC-FX12 with Leica lens, 7.2megapixels and mega optical image stabilisator. I must confess, however, that in spite of the mega stabilisator, my pictures of our Christmas tree looked like it was taken during a small earthquake. Most of the tree looked clear enought, but the top was slightly fuzzy like it had been trembling very fast at the moment the picture was taken.
I took a lot of snapshots of Mosse under the kitchen-table lamp, with the close-up function on and the flash off, and here is the best one, incidently so successful that I felt I could post it just after one of Ken’s “cat-snaps”:
THIS IS MOSSE CARAMEL:

Thanks Jan, I sure will post more photos, but I wanted to baffle everyone who knows about my tremor trouble whith this clear picture – the equipment is top notch, but human error often plays an important role in the outcome of things – in my case a very uncontrollable error at that.
Mosse got her (!) first name from one of hubby’s aunts who also had brown and beige as her color scheme. I added “Caramel” for the same reason; her colors remind me of different kinds of toffee, called “karamell” in Norwegian.
Terry – give your Sasha a goodie, let her know you have more, and after a while she MIGHT sit still in anticipation of more goodies to come. I had some small cubes of dried pollack to make Mosse stay on the table, but of course she was walking all over it, and I took many shots of her which were completely useless, but with a digital camera that doesn’t matter of course.
OK – so here is my Christmas tree with a shaky top, but still a picture worth saving, I think.
OK – so here is my Christmas tree with a shaky top, but still a picture worth saving, I think.
The top is not shaking/trembling…..
It’s an optical illusion caused by the bright background (through the window) filtering through the tree top and your flash hitting the tree top…..that’s a common anomaly with back-lit subjects…..notice that everything else on either side of the window is fine. -
AnonymousJanuary 6, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Thank you so much for the information, Ken – in the meantime I have found that I really don’t need to use the flash so much. I have just been outside and taken pictures in the dead of night of the lovely snow-scape we have at the moment. The temperature is on the rise, so to-morrow the whole “picture” may melt away. I don’t have time to transfer the shots to my ‘puter to-night, it’s already past midnight here, but I’m really excited to see how they have turned out.
BTW, Ken, what do you think of my camera?
Good night!
-
AnonymousJanuary 7, 2008 at 8:26 am
Thanks again, Ken:D , I just wanted to hear it from a “pro” (and of course the magazine rating it as “superb”) that I sort of intuitively chose one of the best cameras according to my needs. And the price?, Well, it might be much in the US, but a little more than $300 inclusive a 1MB memory card is a bargain in Norway!
The “dark night” pictures from yesterday turned out quite OK, but the view from the window beside my desk is so much nicer just now, that I wanted to share it with all of you. We have had just a perfect amount of snow, making everything white and crispy, but down in the part of the country where my island is, the conditions have been terrible. Heard to my amazement that Northern California also had been paralyzed by snow and hard wind – is this a normal thing, or what?
Anyway, this is normal and peaceful:

Pretty scene Allaug!
The snow in northern California is mostly in the mountains, and they got a blizzard.
We had 40-60mph wind and a couple of inches of rain. Where I am it was okay….but 1 million people were without power….the wind blowing down trees and limbs that in turn pulled down power lines, and in some cases the wind itself knocked down the power poles. Where I live we have underground power lines.

AnonymousJanuary 9, 2008 at 3:35 pm
The snow on the trees was gone the next afternoon, but I hope it will come back later. Anyway here are a few “dark moods” from Norway:

Thank you!A few years ago there was this really “handsome” Siamese type, we called Sy. He was a very nice male.
One day we noticed that he was nearly dead, dehydrated, emaciated, etcetera!
He was so bad that we were able to easily go to him, pick him up and take him to the vet.
We spent beau-coup $$ and when we brought him home he convalesced totally, and
as I said he was a terrific cat, very intelligent and affecionate. As soon as he was well enough, he TORE & CHEWED his way through the screen door to get out of the house!
Of course he continued to hang around and be loveable…..for a while.
Then he was killed by a car. -

Let’s have a picture of a dog for a change- I proudly present to all Americans my favourite Swedish dog STURE!
He is 1\8 wolf, 1\8 malamut and 6\8 German Shepherd. He is such a nice fellow, it doesn’t even scare me when he licks my face (and I used to be VERY weary of all canines, big or small)!Hubby’s arm is not many centimetres behind him, so you can see the size of him:

Snowball is so cute that I feel it in my stomack just to look at her picture. She is among the ferals, isn’t she, and I guess (let me coin the phrase) uncuddleable, something than would have broken my heart if I had met her in person.:( Feeling it my tummy is nice, though!
Keep posting folks, I’m due for a small trip again this Tuesday\Wednesday, to Denmark for a change, and I guess I’ll have a pic or two to show for it when I return. Don’t expect any photos from Demnmark, though – we’ll only be there for two hours, between 8 and 10 A.M., and it’s way too early for me to do anything but get my system working, but I love a nice voyage being of sailor stock ๐ for generations!

I’m sorry I can’t help you with your tecnical problem, Veronica, but I really love your picture of Gemini – is he (she?) really 18 years? Quite an age for a cat, I think, and very nice to know that our Mosse is just halfway there, she just turned 9.
This picture was taken in the morning March 4th this year, from our breakfast table on deck 15 onboard the ferry between Oslo, Norway and Kiel, Germany. We were on our way home to Oslo, and this photo shows the western outskirts of our capital. I live a little bit further west, just ouside the picture, between the fjord and the hills. A very nice place to live, if you ask me!:)

You have two sets of [IMG][/IMG] when you put the photo link in.
If you edit your post you should be able to get rid of it…….just delete the extra ones! Here’s one that I deliberately did that to as an example, using a small size recent photo!:

I really want to share the view from my bed-room window as it was on May 10th, when we arrived on the island – it’s a wild cherry tree, it’s usually very pretty at this time of year, but I’ve never seen it blossom like this before: (I have to give you the largest version so you may see more details)

I hope the bees have been thorough so there will be many small, but sweet red and yellow cherries i July:rolleyes:

May 17 is the Norwegian Consitution-day (national day). The most important celebration of the day is the children’s parade. Here is a picture from our capital, Oslo, where the parade goes up to the castle, seen in the background of the picture. All the schools in Oslo join together in one enormous parade:

But on my island there were no kids, so we grownups had to make a parade of our own, single file to make it longer, but also because the path was so narrow. It may interest you to know that instead of the regular marching band, we had a flute-player from Vermont leading the procession:

After he procession, with a “champagne-break” half way, we went for cakes and coffee in one of the ladies’ house, and I made a speech honoring the day and our “Founding Fathers”.

Jamie, here’s the way I would do it:

Use a photo editing program like Photoshop to reduce the original digital photo down to a reasonable size like 8 – 9 inches wide and “save as”.

Sign up for Flickr

upload the photo

click on the photo to get the larger version

right click on the larger photo

select “Properties” at the bottom

highlight and copy the address

you get something like:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3137/2570655667_d7e3d991fb.jpg?v=0

click on the photo icon above the message box

paste the address

remove the extra http:// and everything behind the .jpg

click okay and you’re done
Here is the photo using the address above:

You just make me smile every time i come to this thread! I hope you know how much of an influence you will have on your “grandangels” lives! You are obviously a wonderful grandpa! They will be sharing “grandpa” memories with their grandkids some day, with huge smile on their faces! My grandparents played a huge role in my life, and still do. You are all lucky to have one another! From a granddaughter who loves her grandparents like crazy – thank you for making a difference in the life of a child!

Here is a June sunset (at around 10.30 p.m.) as seen from my window. The little “UFO” in the middle of the photo is a flaw in the window-pane, as it dates back to the 1860’ies (not a spelling mistake!). That my flag-pole looks crooked is due to the same thing – the colors, however, are true and not an optical illusion:

The other day she tried to bury a bowl of ice cubes I put out for them. :rolleyes:We don’t have that yukky carpet anymore now that we don’t have to worry about Emmitt’s hips. Thank goodness!
I still don’t have any good pictures of the frogs… they are very small and hide from the light. Maybe next time I clean the tank I can get a shot of them.
Since I won’t make it to the doohickey in November this is the best I can do for now. :p
Great shots Ken and Jim. Love the puppy! Now I havea dumb question for you Ken. I am not a cat lover ๐ (sorry), so want to know what is a feral cat?
Thank you Jan!The ferals by us have been born feral, and are not domesticated.
The word “feral” means wild.
According to Wikipedia: A feral cat (or stray cat, alley cat) is a cat which has been separated from domestication, whether through abandonment, loss, or running away, and becomes wild. The term also refers to descendants of such cats, but not to wild cats, whose ancestors were never domesticated.

The thermometer read 106ยบ in the shade and the air was smoky from the forest fires to the north. Junior and a couple of other ferals were just trying to stay cool in the shade of our backyard trees.
As I treid to get my lens as close to the glass door as I could to reduce the reflection/glare the metal end of the lens hit the glass which caused Junior to open his eyes and I got this one shot before he closed them again.

Gracie is a recluse……she just goes off and hides by herself. When she eats she constantly scans all around her and above her for any sign of another cat or any other movement. If she sees anything at all she runs up a tree, over the fence and she’s gone, back to hiding. She is so hard to catch for a photo!
I had to shoot at my maximum telephoto range of 300mm, me standing well back inside the house away from the glass so she could not see me. Then I tapped on the wall next to me. As soon as she picked her head up to look for the source of the noise – just before she ran off – I got this one shot of her……finally! Gracie is one of my favorite’s.

Day 983 of my captivity.
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.
They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets.Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.
The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.
Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a ‘good little hunter’ I am.
Bastards! There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event.
However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of ‘allergies.’ I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow — but at the top of the stairs.
I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog continues to receive special privileges. He is regularly released and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.
Great shot Ken. I am trying out the photography thing myself. I kinda got interested looking at what you all do here. I have been taking pictures of my flowers and have a couple good shots. One of these days I am going to follow the instructions for posting pictures here and get some things going.

Ken I missed a good photo shot today, I was mowing the bottom land on this farm. I saw a doe that had 3 fawns, it would have made a good shot for this thread. The 1 amazing thing I saw awhile back was a Sea Hawk diving into the water on the lake on this farm, every time it came flying out of the water it had a fish.

I think that bird may have been released here by the Dept of Fish & Wildlife, as they also released some Eagles here to. There’s a 3500 acre lake 3 miles from here, I look for them to turn Bears loose here next. -

Because I am pretty new, I had not opened this thread yet and I have just read 63 Pages this afternoon. All I can say is wow! If I did not already know this world has beauty everywhere-even in a simple flower, to all the animals and all the children-everything has been beautiful to see and sometimes hilarious to read. Especially, Ken, your ist person cat story and, Terry, your bears-I am still laughing. BUT I have learned about Allaug’s camera and three ways to post pics-I didn’t find an answer how to look at the pics with a red X? And after 63 pages, I have to say that Ken, I loved the pic of the lion best-held my breath looking at it’s beauty and felt like if I moved it would have had me for supper. Looking forward to reading page 64. Thanks for a wonderful journey in pics today everyone. Emma

Emma: I heard this a few yrs back that the Dept of Fish & Wildlife did release a couple of brown bear cubs in the land that surrounds the lake. They also set otters loose & beavers, as to which those beavers have been, trying to damn up the creek by my brothers house. I look at any time for them to set Wolves loose here, we already have Coyotes. As to which the coyotes have been mating with dogs in this area. I got a look at one of them awhile back, it ran across my yard with a coyote.

Ken, several of your pics are “currently unavailable”-are you exhibiting them? You should showcase your wonderful photographs-Our World in Pictures-or something. Or everyone together/ What pics I saw today were supurb!

Thank you Emma…and for your previous comment! The “Red X” often indicates what you’ve found, ”currently unavailable”…. Sometimes my photo gets moved to a different folder at Flickr, or I may have re-processed it and therefore had to re-save it, or I have deleted it for some reason….and some may have been changed to “private” for family only…..
My Flickr site has all that are currently viewable….. I’m very happy you are enjoying them! I do have a Coffee Table Book of my photos, and it’s available online through Blurb.com.

I will have my friends order your book tomorrow for me; one of my girlfriends and I bought a photographer’s book last summer and it had a photograph and the actual story-we cut the book binding up and gave a lot of our friends the pics they wanted and the stories-my favorite is matted and framed in my office of two row boats in water-resembled my grandpa’s bayou where he rented the rowboats to the fishermen, and if business was slow, we kids got to row. A picture really does say a thousand words-that so many can relate to a picture in their own lives is what makes it so special, I think. I know you have been told that a lot, guess I’m next in line to tell you.

I’ve taken Volume 2 off….I looked it over and found some small errors with the separator pages…… There were several new photos in this, but fewer total, and many were repeats of the original…..
I may re-edit Volume 2 and re-submit it, but probably not until after my next Canadian photo trip in September.

I did some editing of this shot, and added the border and signature using Flickr’s on-line editing program, Picnik.
For web viewing of the image I like it…..certainly can’t compare with Photoshop, etc., et.al., but for a quick edit, with some pretty nice features, it works!

Ok this one is for the gardeners here, as this is a piece of my garden equiptment. It is a 1968 International Cub Cultivating tractor, that tank contains 2o 20 20 Liquid fertilizer. Believe me it really works on garden vegetables, there’s not another tractor in this area like this one. As It has a pump that is hooked into a spray boom on the back of the tractor, I can easily convert this with a hose & a spray nozzle. It will rain the mixture in a mist for 30 ft, like I was saying that fertilizer mix really works on garden vegetables. It’s a little more potent than miracle grow, Just wanted to share this as it’s something a little different.

Yup. We need the police. And which one of us hasn’t made a dumb mistake? Buy the officer a coffee and a donut. They’ll feel better soon. Buy me one too.
Ken,
Great shot. Judging from her left ear, it looks like she didn’t take any guff from anybody. Just out of curiosity, what was the f stop you used to get that kind of depth of field?Jim C
Thank you Jim! That spot is very shaded, and the lens I was using (Nikkor 18-200VR) has a maximum aperture of only 5.3 at that focal length (200mm), which it used. I would have preferred f8, but that woould have pushed the ISO way up.Here are the settings from the EXIF data…..
By the way, you can download Opanda’s IEXIF data reader (it is free), and it shows the settings used, if the EXIF data is still embedded. Some photo programs strip that info when any changes are made to a photo. And, some sites don’t display a photo with EXIF data either…… My photos nearly always have the info in them.

A beautiful rose Ken. A gorgeous cat(not feral, but a contented house cat)
Had a cat like that, got it from the pound, he would only sit on my dad’s lap. No one else would he even let touch. Always brought me his kill of the night, usually rabbits. Would scare the bee geebies out of me. Took him to the vet one time for a bleeding ear, vet looked at him, chuckled, and said “this cat has been in a lot of fights, but I bet he’s won more than he lost.”

Terry-what a great pic-could take a picnic basket there and sit all day and listen to…nothing but the sounds of nature.
AngelCher-I can only recognize a few fish but the mouth on that baby looks like a shark.
Jim-I sure hope you understood Ken’s instructions of the depth of the pic he took of Gracie. I understood a few lines like flash-off ๐ but must confess I need a camera that is a lot more of the automatic everything to it.
Ken-wanted to ask what kind of digital camera I could buy that isn’t complicated to figure out and easy on the pocketbook. Once I have learned something techinical and done it a few times, then I am fine, but really need something economical to start with with a good zoom. Looked at an Olympus 1010 with 10 megapixels, 2.7 hypercrystal LCD, 7X optical zoom.face detection, Model#226285 ( I am truthfully copying what the ad says)-the saleslady made it look pretty easy, but didn’t get a chance to play with it, as all the cameras were connected to a 6″ cord locked to the counter. This one cost $250-. Wanted your opinion on what is out there that an ametuer like me could figure out and still come out with a decent pic. Thanks for your time and opinion.

Thank you all for the beautiful shots (and the funny pic’s, Jim) you have posted since my last visit.
A week ago we had a herd of North Atlantic dolphins frolicking and hunting herring and mackerel in the sound between our island and the mainland. This is such a rare event, that I have never seen it before in my life! It was really something to have them swimming so close to our boat that we could hear them breathing when they surfaced for air. I have always dreamt of swimming with dolphins, but I couldn’t get down into the water from the boat, so I have to wait for the next time;)
Here is a picture of some of them:

Cheryl, we had a bee swarm ๐ฎ come into the yard a couple years ago and I tried taking pictures but was afraid to go outside so they didn’t turn out as I took them throught the window. It was an impressive sight. I had never seen so many bees in one place at any given time. They attached themselves to a tree in the front yard and you could not see any tree for all the bees. Nature’s wonders! ๐ Glad this is only one of those little guys. ๐

I just love water-lillies, Cheryl! It’s a pity they don’t grow in salt water, but there is a small pond on an islet not far away – but almost out in the ocean itself – where water-lillies grow in spite of the hash climate.
Here are the lillies in my garden, with some poppies in between. If I translate what we call these lilies, it will be “Imperial Crowns”, but I don’t know the true English name. Can anybody help me with that?

Good luck! Now, the most important thing to remember is to not shake/move the camera as you take the picture! Many people push too hard on the shutter-release button when they take a photo and that makes the camera move so the photo looks blurry or out of focus.
I have one of those small cameras with only a screen on the back to view what I’m shooting, rather than an eyepiece with a viewfinder…… Without holding this camera to my eye, and thus supporting it against my forehead, I find it nearly impossible for me to hold the camera steady enough!
Great shot Allaug! Those are “Leopard Lillies”……

Well, we kept “putting off” catching Junior when he was doing so poorly……
But lo and behold, Junior has gotten well! He is back to his old self, climbing again, nuzzling his ever present companion, JJ (Junior, Jr.).So I managed to get a couple of Junior yesterday!

Enjoying all the photos tremendously – here is one from me, the flowers aren’t fresh, but I found the light and atmosphere of the picture itself rather intriguing. It’s taken in my “red” living room in the middle of summer when the sun comes in through the big windows in the evening:

The last time I visited Caples Lake it was full of water…… This beautiful lake is at the Mormon Emigrant Trail near (Kit) Carson Pass in the Sierras. Caples is being emptied to do repair work on the gates of it’s dam.
Caples Lake
Located at 7950 feet in elevation and surrounded by granite peaks, fir, pine, and groves of aspen and alder, Caples Lake is pure joy for the photographer and avid angler. There is fishing access at the Caples auxiliary dam, Caples Lake Resort, and Woods Creek, which also provides parking and vault toilets. At the west end of the lake, the Caples Lake Trailhead has parking, vault toilets, fishing, and trail access to the backcountry.
Pano of Caples Lake

Ken! I do enjoy them! Every day when I come in here and see these beautiful photo’s, you helped me travel the world without having to leave my chair! No fighting the airports, no digging for luggage. No fears of plane crashes! Just come in here with my cup of coffee and visit a place that puts a smile on my face. And for me which can’t travel right now! You have placed me in a different world every morning. I feel like I am traveling somewhere and in a relaxed mode too!
It’s so wonderful seeing many with talent in here! For some of us, that is greatly appreciated. Thank-you so much for sharing your talent! I see Cheryl too has the artistic talent. She’s pretty good also. I love her flowers!

Thank you Linda and Cheryl!
There are tons of tutorials on line, as well as photo forums, to learn more about taking good photos.
The three most important basics are:
1 – Do not let the camera move as you press the shutter!!
This is called “camera shake” and it makes a photo look blurry and out of focus.2 – Do not “blow the highlights”!
If any, or certainly a large area, of the photo is too bright, all the details get washed out, and it just appears as a sort of white. This can’t be fixed.
You can add light where needed, but you can’t take it away.3 – Keep the camera level.
Make sure that things that should be level, or upright are not slanted. Now the hard part!
Post-processing (PP) is what you do to a photo AFTER you take it. You move the photo from the camera to your computer, then you use a Photo Editing program to adjust the photo. There are many of these programs ranging from simple to very difficult.
All of them give you automatic photo adjusting! You can also take tilt out of a non-level photo. There are free programs for beginners! You can use Picassa from Google.com, or Picnik at Flickr.com, then there is Adobe Photo Express at Adobe.com.
Once you get familiar with basic tools you can advance to programs that do things you won’t believe!

Hi Ken! I just printed our your new lesson to me! And am going to try today taking some shots and see how I do! Thanks for sharing your knowledge to me and the others in here. Just curious though! What kind of camera do you use. The photo’s look so professional and some of these digital cameras are okay but not great. I want to get myself a better digital camera for Christmas. Any suggestions? Thanks! You are so wonderful to have in here! It certainly makes my day. I came in this morning and had to rush and see what was posted in the picture section. ๐

I use a Nikon D300.
I have several lenses ranging in focal lengths from 12mm to 300mm.
The lens I use when I can only have “one” lens, a “walk-around” lens,
is the Nikon 18-200VR (VR means vibration reduction….it’s an “anti-shake” lens).
Canon also makes good cameras and their lenses offer a similar technology. Some cameras offer that in-camera, as opposed to in-lens, but the in-lens technology is superior.
How much you are “willing” to spend is the most important factor in choosing a camera and lens!
You can buy a used Nikon camera (from a reputable source or person) that has little use (a relatively low number of shutter actuations) and save a lot of money! Then if you sell it, you may get back what you paid.
I have bought several used lenses and never lost money when selling them.Buy from a reputable on-line company….never from a local store and you save lots more.
If you buy a digital SLR (single lens reflex) they offer the best photo quality and ease of taking a good photo. If you stay with a specific brand you can buy other lenses for it.
Canon lenses are cheaper than Nikon lenses. Many people buy Canon for that reason, and as I said, Canon makes good cameras. Canon produces an image that is quite nice right out of the camera. Nikon produces an image that is best post-processed for the end result!
I think that in the “point and shoot” type of camera (of the better/best ones offered) Canon has the edge…..in my opinion….
If I were to choose a starter DSLR it would be the Nikon D40.
Choosing a lens is tough because it depends on the type of shooting you would do.The “starter” Nikon is the D40. The starter Canon is the Rebel XT.
The lens I think very highly of for a Nikon “basic” lens is the Nikon 24-120VR. This is an older model lens and can be bought at good prices especially used.
This whole process should require that you spend a lot of time reading and researching about these cameras and lenses. Everyone will have an “opinion” and they will all be different!!!
Some time ago I sold my Nikon D70 with the 24-120VR lens to my friend. We’re still friends, and he accompanied me the other day on my shoot in the Sierras.
Look at this Canon, it’s likely a very good all-around camera but without interchangeable lenses…..

Hi Ken! Beautiful photo of the landscape but a great looking photo of you also! My father was 22 years Army Retired. Master Sergeant. When he passed away, my mother gave me all his military stuff. 3 huge books of all his Military Records. He was in Korea and a POW for 50 months. And then by accident they sent him to Vietnam. But he stayed over their in Vietnam. They gave him light duties over there because of his past history. I have alot of Private Military Photos of the Korean War. Taken by a Military Photographer. They were given to my father. So I cherish his belongings. Plan on passing that down to my children. Thanks for sharing!

Ken that photo looks like some of the areas around here, being as I live out in the country. There have been quite a few what look like barns built in this area, that are actually homes. Some of them are really pretty on the inside, I worked for a guy back in the 80s painting houses & barns.

We painted what looked like a barn on the outside, on the inside it was like walking inside a mansion. It had a spiral staircase in it, the steps were made of glass & it had a brass railing on it. The home belonged to a guy that now owns 4 McDonalds restaurants. Looks on the outside can be very deceiving take my word for it, you never know whats inside of what looks like an barn or outbuilding. Thanks for sharing that photo Ken. ๐ -

You guys have now got me wanting to go fishing. I have not done that in years since my father passed away. He was the only family member of mine that would take me fishing. My husband hates it! He don’t like the slimy fish and messing with worms. ๐ I grew up a beach bum because my parents had a trailer at the beach. Saw many nights fishing and many early morning fishing trips.
Terry! You are right about those barns. I have a friend of mine here in NC that took one and made it a home too and it was beautiful inside. Darn! Wished I had myself a fishing buddy!:D -

Nice photo Ken! Also a nice Camera. I can tell you enjoy what you do in photography. Must be a fun experience finding beautiful shots like this that you do! I would have alot of fun doing this myself. Taking photo’s of how beautiful our world can really be. Especially when there are not people in that area destroying it.
Shows we really do have a beautiful world. But mankind itself has to learn how to appreciate it! Thanks for sharing Ken! -

Hi Ken! I know the feeling. I used to love gardening. But now have a container garden. That digging in the dirt was killing me! ๐ We got a riding lawn mower and have two acres to cut and that just about kills me doing too! Don’t dare sit on the ground! Will take forever to get back up! ๐ I do have a cheapy swimming pool though and enjoy getting in the pool.
If I am better next summer, me and my husband are going to the beach and the mountains for a vacation. Have not been anywhere in 2 years and 4 months. And I hope to see that day! If that day comes I will have the camera out and will be shooting away! ๐ -

That’s a good “typical” view…. In all the areas where we roam through the woods, there are so many trees down among the standing, and so much dead-fall, that it is so hard to move off of the trails such as they are.

Last month I went to the river with my parents to watch sailboat races. I saw this pair in town on our way to the river, naturally I couldn’t get my camera out fast enough. Oh the windstorm left 650,000 people in Ky without power, including my daughter that lives in Louisville Ky. A big limb came down & tore the wires off her house to. I was trying to walk down the road while those wind gusts were hitting here, the wind was almost shoving me off my feet.

Eeew Terry! That looks like a nasty injury there! Sure hope you have something for pain. What did you do to cause that? Was it caused from the tree cutting at your mom’s house! I know that hurts! I’m surprised you haven’t had to have tendon, nerve repairs requiring another surgery. But am not sure how deep the cut was. It looks deep in the photo’s! If you are still having problems you may have to see another doctor and get nerve and tendon repair done. Had a cut many years ago and got stitched up but that injury was giving me a fit. Went back and found out my tendon needed repair surgery! So they had to recut the wound. No fun picnic! Hope you get better soon!

You are not going to believe this, as I don’t hardly have any pain from this injury at all. I’m on 100 mg of Lyrica 3 xday & I discussed this with the drs at the hospital & the wound care center. They said the same thing that the Lyrica was taking care of the pain as it could be considered as nerve pain. Oh you want to know what caused that injury, me & my brother were working on a sickle bar mower used to cut hay with.

I was in the process of putting a chain around a tree, so we could pull it open to make sure it would trip right & not tear up something on the tractor. Well my brother was on the tractor & his foot slipped off the clutch, ๐ฎ the tractor came back & slammed my arm between the back of the mower & the tree. The next thing I knew my brother had me on the way to the hospital. The bad thing about this whole thing is it happened on my birthday. Nice birthday gift huh ! I don’t think I want to try & celebrate any more birthdays as something is always going wrong. Last yr I was trying to deal with losing Debra that was just a very bad day for me. The yr before that I had to take Debra to the hospital, so like I said I just don’t have a good birthday anymore. -

It really hurts me to look at your wound, Terry – a most unwanted birthday-gift for sure! (I guess it will be totally wrong to wish you “Many happy returns!”)
The day after to-morrow I’m leaving my island for this year. It has been mostly nice and mild weather, I have had time to finish everything in my garden, and I’m sort of wanting to go back to “sivilisation” after the most part of five months here.
As a “farewell-present” I give you this picture of my bay, taken from the west side towards south-east. My house is the white one smack in the middle of the picture. I hope I have given you an impression of why I love it here, beside the fact that I can trace my family back to the 17th century on this very place.

This is one of the 8 city deer we watched the other evening. Right across the creek behind her were a bunch of guys playing football. It was funny to see the young deer jumping and running, it seemed like they were taking some plays from the football players. This was taken 1 block from downtown, right at the foot of the high school hill.

How nice to get so many positive comments on my last picture from my island. I’m sorry it has taken so long for me to thank y’all! Unfortunately very few, and some years nobody, are staying at the place in winter, but when my father grew up there, it was a thriving society with a shop and post-office, a school for children up to 14, and a ferry coming twice a day. From the mid 70’ies all this was gone, and now it’s more or less just a “summer-society”. I find it very observant of you, Jim, to notice the tilt of the trees, and it is of course because of the wind – not only in winter, but even more in the summer that the wind comes from the south-west, up along the coast.
I wish I could see all of you there, and if any of you should ask to come for real, I would surely open my house and my arms to welcome you! (Speaking of which – see my entry in the “Daily Delight” thread).
Here is the very last picture this year from the island – it is taken early one morning – abt. 7a.m. – in July from the quay down below my house:

hi guys..just wanted to share a picture i took last winter of a covered bridge in our area that is being renovated. As children we used to swim in the hole below it..i realize I didn’t put the whole bridge in the picture but wanted to show a bit of everything. I have a scar on the bottom of my foot where I was little and walking across the rocks on the top and slipped and fell. My brothers used to be brave enough to jump off the rocks into the water but had to be very precise becuase there were rocks at the bottom..there were always little snakes swimming along the edges but it was fun to swim up to the waterfall and get up under it..this place holds lots and lots of memories.
Hope you like it:

Ok guys I am just loving this wayyyy too much..Here is a picture of my family. This was taken January 08 so I will try to explain who everyone is and give ages at that time..front row on the left is my brother Raymond 46 years old (how since shaved his beard and mustache off) he is the one that had open heart surgery at 43 years of age..the middle is my mom Marie 64 years old, next is me ๐ 44 years old (i have since grown my hair out again..) back row on the left is Jimmie age 42, next is Ron age 47 and John age 47 (they are identical twins but don’t want to look alike so john has shaved his head completely bald and wears a go-tee, not sure how to spell that lol..) and then Ken is the baby of the family he is 40 years old and has hair down to his butt. As you can tell none of us look healthy and we definitely aren’t. But we all love each other and do our best when we can..Hope you enjoyed meeting my family.

Sherry, Thanks for the pictures. Now we can put a face with a name! It’s nice to meet your family. You guys were like stairsteps growing up! Did all your brothers take care of you? Its nice you were all together. Keep the pictures coming…..you know we love to look at them!

Hi guys,
Thanks, these pictures aren’t the greatest but just a few that were special to me. Yes my brothers always tried to take care of me but I also got my share of whacks up side the head..lol. You know how siblings can be.the bridge is located in Southeastern Ohio around a small town called Deavertown, it is called the Helmick Bridge or Island Run, it is south of Zanesville. I havn’t been to see it since the renovation was completed due to some idiot throwing nails out all over the roads in that area for the last ten months. Which has caused major problems for everyone. But I will get to see it eventually.
Thanks for helping

One thing about being away a few days, is I get to look in here at an album.
Allaug-That last picture of the island is stunning. I studied it a few times, because I had never seen such sharp reflections, not one ripple, yet the sail boats are facing slight different directions, but the reflections are almost parallel–different mooring then? Even the trees look like there is some wind in them. A wonderful pic-you did well with buying the right camera, that’s for sure! We have a beautiful world. Norway sure is high on the beauty list.
Ken- Your shots are all wonderful. Your shooting locations were perfect. You must have had some good shooting days. Glad you got home safely.
Sherry-You did a great job on the bridge-I have always liked a little story with a picture. And the next time your meany brother bops you, you just say, “I am going to Micigan, close to the lake, and live with my twin” (my SIL) You two could be twins. Are you 5’9” by any chance? The resemblance is remarkable.
Great shots everyone. Like JimC said,” Keep em coming”.

Hi Emma,
I am laughing because you asked how tall I am..I am barely 5’1…yes quite short. But as a matter of fact I do have a lot of family in Michigan. Who knows, maybe it’s a relative of mine..but I will gladly come and stay at the lake..i’m ready for a break from all these brothers..lol

The dreaded red-X either means that there is something wrong with the link (URL address of the photo) you created/posted (this is the usual issue), or the host website is having a technical problem (happens but not often, and if one photo is working they would all be).

I watch them from inside through a double-glazed sliding patio door….they can’t see me. I saw Cuppy watching a bird and she was behind a flower-pot…I waited and when she was in the “best” pose I started shooting.
I just watch the ferals and when I catch them in the right spot/light/pose I take a shot. I get ready, then tap on the glass which makes them look right at the sound (me)…..
I had good luck with our (long gone) indoor kitties too but had to work at it!

Things are back to normal after two weeks of American relatives visiting. I’ll write more about that elsewhere, but here is a snap-shot of the polished inside of the bedrock where or common family lived for generations. The nearest town is called Larvik, and so this exeptional rock (mineral) is called Larvikitt. When it is polished, like in the picture, it is called “Emerald Pearl” and is used for all sorts of things, from jewellery to house facade plates. Here there was made a polished hollow inside a big chunk, and I stuck my camera inside and used the flash – the result was rather astonishingly beautiful, don’t you think? I knew I had to share it from the moment I saw the photo on my computer.

PS: I tried to upload the picture here from Picasa Web Album, but it seems like the Forum wouldn’t accept that address, so I tried the “old” way with greater success it seems.

Our local newspaper listed this and some other homes as having good displays for Halloween.
As it turned out the other homes were not IMHO worth getting out of the car for…..This one was….and it was too wide a scene (in the low light) to take in one shot, so I broke it into thirds!

Glad it brought good memories. It did for me as well. We swam in the pool and it was quite a treat. I don’t remember the name of the falls, but I will try to find out. The water coming from the “cave/hole” on the right side is a unique characteristic that will help me find it.
How do I get a pic on this site? Not computer savy yet?
Hi Sherry! You first must “upload” the photo file to a web storage site for photos. I use Flickr.com and recommend it for you. It is free for its basic service.
Once you have uploaded your photo at Flickr it sizes it automatically into several useful sizes (such as a thumbnail, square, etc.) and it will appear and you will click on “All Sizes” button which will give show it at its largest size.
This site will display very large sizes, but in order to have it easily viewable you will want not less than 800 pixels wide, or more than 940 pixels wide.
Flickr has some tools that help resize if thats a problem. I resize before I upload, but that’s another lesson!

Shirley, It is on the island of Kauai. We were there in 1995.
I’m 99% sure it is the Wailua waterfall (on the Wailua river). We actually hiked down to the base of the falls (pre-CIDP of course) and it was quite a difficult hike. The water was rather chilly which was welcomed after the hike.

Ken, that’s beautiful. I especiallly like the way the water looks with your slow exposure. You have a good eye and a great touch. Thanks for sharing it. How are you getting your borders? Are the borders a function of flickr or do you post them with the borders?
Here’s another on I took at the Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery on Oahu. The chapel has these glass tiles that actually have relief. They are multishaped in several different colors and look beautiful lit from behind.
I think this particular tile is a replica of the head of the Statue of Liberty.

Actually this was shot at a fast shutter:
Exposure Time = 1/250″
F Number = F5.6
Focal Length = 18mmThe frame/border on this I did on Flickr, because this shot was already there….. I used to use Flickr for frames, but I’ve been using a “frame action” in Photoshop CS3 that I downloaded from a photo site….they are by Bud Guinn. They give a lot more control and are a lot better looking!
I’ve just posted some flowers using a frame made in Photoshop.

When I post photos they are at a rather small 800 pixels wide…..and that will work for a photo only about 3 inches wide……
If you want a larger one, I can upload one good for an 8×10, just let me know!

Inspired by all the wonderful views of waterfalls and other scenic landscapes, I hereby give you a close-up of how unpredictable and fascinating nature can present itself if you stop and take the time to look closely – here for instance I suddenly discovered a whole colony of tiny rubies in the bedrock out on our islet ouside the island. I have been running (in the days of yore) around on the cliffs of this islet since I was very young, but only this summer did I notice the gems. It might be because now I have to take it v-e-r-y easy when I move over from where we get ashore to the best spot for sun-bathing:

Takk for hilsen GaryO! You make me curious of what kind of connection you might have to Norway! In the meantime let me give all of you another snapshot of the one thing Norway has most of – even mor than oil (Oh, perhaps that’s why you mentioned Stavanger, Gary – and Huston\Stavanger makes sense in that respect!) and that is solid ROCK – here carved out in a most peculiar way by the ice-age ice turning stones around, making perfectly circular holes like these. I couldn’t find the English word for this phenomenon, but in Norwegian it’s called “jettegryte” which means “A Gigant’s Cauldron”. These two are the size of ordinary human kettles, but they can be humongus!
This is also from my islet, and the picture reminds me of a troll’s face:

-
Allaug, LOL! I love your troll, the process that produced the holes is fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
This is a photo of a Rock Troll I found in the Great Plains of Texas (far north Texas). They hide quite well. Do you see him (or her I’m not sure how one tells the sex of a rock troll… ๐

Thanks for sharing the Texan trolls GaryO, I say trollS, because I can see a whole family with cousins far removed peeking out from the rock-wall – very amusing, indeed ๐ !
Ken, how come all “your” feral cats look so well groomed, I would expect cats, especially those with such long fur, to look much more unkempt when they don’t have anyone to care for them?
Let me follow up on the cat-theme and give you Mosse in a maritime environment:

Mosse looks wonderful Allaug!
The feral cats keep themselves groomed. The only time I see a feral that hasn’t groomed itself is when they are sick, and when they start again we know they are well, but if they don’t it means they will die….or we catch them and have them put to sleep.
The exception is a cat/feral or otherwise that is very stressed for some reason…..those also don’t groom until they hopefully recover and start grooming. If a cat doesn’t look obviously sick, the three quick signs of a sick cat are:
– Not grooming
– Nose is warm (we touch by using the back of a finger)
– Their scent is off/bad (of course you should first know how one smells when healthy) -

My cats just eat sleep and play. When they wake up in the mornings they start running and playing. Then they eat their Fo-Fo! They know that word really well. That and Milk-Milk! After they eat then they take their Cat Nap and sleep for several hours. Wake up again and start picking on each other. They love their mousie’s. My bedroom has toy mousies everywhere. Pumpkin has a huge stuffed mousie that she refuses to let anybody get. The moment she loses her mousie she gets all depressed. Then I have to go on a mousie hunt just to cheer her up again. Baby Girl… the one I had to bottle feed. She thinks she is human and still thinks I am her mommy. As soon as she jumps in my lap she wants nurse nurse. She no longer has her bottle anymore so now she grabs my thumb and expects nurse nurse with my thumb. LOL! Like I said! I got a bunch of rotten cats! Hugs

Well not quite the night before Christmas….but an elf was busy making gift bags for Christmas gifts….and when she got up for a moment I snapped this.

P
Perry, you have to first upload them to a web site that stores them, then use the URL provided to link to the photo here.
I use and recommend Flickr.com which is free for the basic service.
You use the icon and fill in the correct URL.
Or simply type: [img][/img] and place the URL between those two bracketed items.

Ken & Terry,
Ken, Great photos, one look at them and they seem to tell a story. The sewing machine with the light on (someone is busy) and the cards in the background, a very content cat enjoying the sunshine.
Terry, Your winter scene says it all, beautiful to look at but miserable to deal with.
Thank you both -
Now that’s a pretty cat Ken, I’ve tried to get close enough to my cat Sasha to get a shot like that. She’s just too antsy, she doesn’t like mornings that’s for sure. She’s more like a wild animal, can’t even get close to her. ;)

A nice pic of JJ Ken. You have mentioned about cats leaving and catching others and having them put down, because they were too sick to recover, I was wondering how many ferals you have right now. I love them all.
Thank you Emma!
The “regulars” now number about 8……. A recent article I read said that you cannot reduce the feral population by capturing and euthanizing them, but a program of catch-neuter-release will. It seems that we’ve done that…….but I do miss them…:( You’ll notice that nearly every cat I shoot has a notched ear, which means they were neutered and released.

My cats are indoor cats that are too busy running around getting into mischeif! Chasing their plastic balls, chasing after each other and then throwing their fake mousies around. ROFL! And it’s hard getting those little buggars to get still! I still say my best best is to cheat and take them to a Pet Photographer! I have taken at least a hundred shots and download them to get horrible shots that got blurred because they moved on me while trying to take a photo of them. LOL! Lets just say there will never be another Ken on this site! ๐

Kelly, my Daughter and I, had this chance photo last summer we were driving up the side of the Blue Mountain to walk the Appalacian and Mommy and her spotted baby were right there. I’ll try not to over bore you all. I don’t have as many photo’s as Ken but I have alot. This was shot with Nikon D60 and 70-300 mm lens. I have recently bumped up to a D90 which means higher resolution and picture controls.
It takes me about 100 exposures to maybe get a good photo. It is not easy, that is for sure. the Vultures are easy to get, Hawks are real hard. It is not
only the chance opportunity, but then you need the sun and all the right conditions to line up. Real Challenge, Try getting a shot of Lightning. It can be done. The baby Kale is my best friends, Niece’s son. they are in Pa a few time a year and Kale gets alot of attention when in town. You can see why!

Here is a cute puppy my neighbor has. Her Name is Marley. I had a good RAW photo but have been experimenting with both CS4 and Elements 7.0. this is tweaked to show vibrantly green grass yet show the chocolate off.
Ken, Beautiful Cat Photo above, I saw that one on your flicker site. Nice. I wanted the D200, but just a bit over my price. the 90 will do me fine

likes to play, affectionate and not too much attitude.

Great shots of Marley and Keara, Tim! I sold my D200 when I got the D300, both are not full-frame, that’s either the D3’s or the D700. My lenses are all based on the 1.5 frame factor so I don’t want full-frame which is best if you need great low-light photos……
Thanks Shirley, Linda…….here’s another travel shot Linda:
I took some shots of Mt. Shasta on my way home from Alaska a couple of years ago but was not happy with what I got. So, I looked for those shots and found two with slightly different exposures to use process.

The whiteness is “frozen fog” from the night before, not snow:

We had a lot of snow last Sunday, and I hurried to document it – already it’s melting away at an unsettling rate. They promise us more snow in a few days though.

My first Robin of 09! we have hundreds in my area already! Its too early for them to be migrating up here, unusual, especially since we still have about 6 inches of snow on the ground, and will be dipping into the low teens and below zero this weekend. I wonder if it has something to do with global warming.;)

It might be global warming, Cheryl, or it may just be a fellow who likes to take chances, and count on a mild winter. The European robins are much smaller, and I think they have all gone south – there are very few insects here in winter – but this blackbird sitting under our empty birdfeeder and looking longingly up towards it, counts on us to make him make it through the cold season, so he can start pleasing us with his wonderful song as early as March. It’s surely worth the cost of the extra seeds. (The sparrows and tits are not so happy about him, I think – he eats A LOT of sun-flower seeds very quickly!):

The area to the west of Mt. Shasta is called The Trinity Alps. I took this shot of the top of Mt. Shasta from about 30 miles away. This is a “pano-crop”. I used the original to make a +1 and -1 copies, then processed as HDR with Photomatix and finished processing in Photoshop PSCS3.

Hi Perry,
that was pretty neat. how did the one goat get up on top of the bail??
Hey, as far as getting the picture to pop when opening the thread. Liz showed me how to best do that.
I went to Photobucket.com, created a login, then you can upload your photo to there and save it. It then puts it into like four formats. All you do is wave your mouse over the picture and the four options appear. I use the lower one IMG. if you click it then it automatically copies it to your computer clipboard. then paste it in the message on your thread. Hope that helps.–tim–

Thank you Tim!
HDR=High Dynamic Range. Typically you take three shots. One at regular exposure, and then one overexposed by 1-stop, and one underexposed by 1-stop. Although I have done 14-shots! And you can also use only 1 shot if you make a copy of it and adjust it to the equivalent of an underexposed shot.
The software that makes this work is Photomatix Pro, and it is way more than just “averaging” or combining the shots…… I’m still learning how to use it!

Hi Ken.
The HDR is awesome. I didn’t think the original single photo could get any better, the HDR really brings it in, all aspects, the sky got nicer.
With that technique you are layering 3 on top of each other all with deffferent exposure comp? they go from great to magnificent.–tim– -

Haven’t been contributing for a long time, and when I finally find something to share with you, hubby has been “playing around” with my camera, and I don’t know what he has done, and neither does he, so the pic’s got a little fuzzy. But anyway, the motive I have given you before, and that is not the important thing, so I’ll share it fuzzyness and all. The important thing is the light, or rather the color of the light at around 5 p.m. in February on an overcast day with snow on the ground. It seems that Terry might have the same phenomenon judging from his ice storm picture, but I find this “winter blue” so fascinating, so here it comes in spite of the flaw:

Allaug, the camera is probably set for tungsten light (regular light bulbs) instead of daylight, or sunlight.
Check the setting, it is called White Balance, and it should just be left in Automatic (A) Mode.
Then it would look like this:

Thanks for trying to help, Ken – but the blue tint of the picture was not the problem – the unsharpness was. The blue light was in fact the real thing, just as it was outside at that precise time in the afternoon around 5 p.m. Here is another one taken a little earlier (abt. 10 minutes I think) so the blue is a little lighter:

Looks like Norway has lots of Pines. At least your neighborhood. Was it early in the morning that its blueish?
Nice looking guys you have there, they look young and innocent, I bet that not the case though, Right Perry??
Here are some birds that came out.
The little one is a black capped chicadee, the med grey one is a white breasted nuthatch followed by a young female Downy woodpecker.

I have to admit I don’t know if the blue light comes in the morning too – I’m fast asleep at dawn, even in the darkest months of the year – as I wrote, the “blue” pic’s were taken at around 5 p.m. We have a lot of pines, but also a lot of other kinds of trees – here is the local play-ground with a very peculiar (mutant?) spruce-tree:

Allaug, What a Beautiful shot.:)
Here is a shot of the Maumee River last weekend the start of an early thaw. Hopefully this spring I’ll be down at the tip of the island fishing for walleye. Wow! What a wondertful place there by the river, Cheryl! Even thouugh I enjoy a good oldfashioned winter here, your picture made me yearn for spring and I could feel the smell of wet grass and soil like it smells when the snow has just thawed away from the ground. Wonder what that place look like in summer, or even between that time and now? Is it far from where you live, Cheryl, so if it was not too much trouble you could give us photos of that wonderful place as the seasons go by? Please? Even pretty please????

Thanks Ken and Allaug!:)
You don’t have to beg Allaug, I’ll look for my pics from last summer. The Maumee River is about a 20 min drive south of me. I go there alot, to look, walk, fish and take pics. This spring I’ll try to get more shots of this view when all the fisherman are out there going after the walleyes. Its really quite the sight, shoulder to shoulder along the river at the rapids. -

Nice flower Cheryl!
Remember that a “trial” program usually has a time limit and then you have to buy it or it stops working. There are some good free programs available too, such as Picasa from Google.
Corel is good software program and well known ($100 or less)……
I have never used Corel, but have used Adobe Photoshop Elements and now Photoshop CS3.
Thanks Ken:) .
I was wondering if I should buy it when the offer runs out or keep playing before I buy one. I don’t want to buy one that is outdated before I learn how to use it to its potential, if you know what I mean.:)
Hold off on buying anything until you have played with it and others so that you can learn what makes them different/better than another.

I don’ t know if I’ve posted this picture of Mosse before, but seeing the color of the beautiful doe, Cheryl, I was so curious to compare the doe’s color with Mosse’s – I think they are almost uncanningly similar:

In late February for a few days the setting sun lights up the diminutive Horsetail Falls of El Capitan and creates a spectacular light show. I know of photographers that tried for several years (one I know took 5 years) before the weather was right and enough water was flowing from the falls! I was very lucky indeed to get this the first time I went.
There are several places/viewpoints to get this shot. I was on a small outcropping in the Merced River….along with 14 other photographers! We had to come down a very slick, icy, snowy river bank in freezing temperatures and I stood there for nearly three hours! Up on the bank were perhaps another 15 photographers, and this was just this one spot…..

While you guy where out enjoy the wide open spaces and the cold, I took my wife down to the beach to celebrate her birthday. The white stuff is sand [not snow]. I know I did ever thing wrong. The shot was taken from the balcony looking down at the water facing into the sun, but the result was rather interesting.

Jim’s picture from the beach some pages back really made me yearn for summer, here the sun is melting the heaps of snow we’ve had around here this year – sixteen years since we had so much last time – we can see the difference from morning till nightfall.
In the mountains there is still a lot. This is my friend’s cabin a few weeks back, and I believe more of the white stuff has come down from the sky up there since this pic was taken:

Ken, What a Gorgeious Shot!!!!:)
I think its a combination of my arms shaking, the wind blowing and my bending over for too long that made the shot blurr, Ken:D It took 2 days for my legs to recover from just 5 mins of bending over shooting crocus’ I need to get into better shooting shape:D
Stacey, I’ll pm you my email addy, I’ll post your pic for you.

It could be that you were too close…..inside the “minimum focusing distance” for the lens.
In terms of camera-shake (the biggest culprit for blurred shots) think “tripod”….or at least a monopod (but it’s easier to use a tripod…)
Admittedly it can be a pain-in-the-butt to set up a tripod for every shot, but the reality is that a shot worth taking is worth using a tripod for……

What an Awesome Shot Ken!!! where did you get a frame like that, and how did you get your signature on it? What program did you use?
Ken, the lenses I have don’t have the zoom power I would like, what lens can I get to get me those close up shots without being right on top of things? right now I have a 18-55 along with a macro and a 2x zoom.

I use an Adobe Photoshop set of “actions” that I downloaded for my frames.
Photoshop has a “Text Tool” for adding text; that’s my signature (font is Rage Italics). For the shots I get of the cats I use a 70-300VR (Vibration Reduction) Lens, often set at the full 300mm.
My favotire “walk-around” lens is an 18-200VR Lens. -
Absolutely stunning!
Ken, I’ve been wondering why your photos have such brilliance of colour?
Are the colours in the scenes actual, or does your camera have special settings to heighten the colours and contrasts as you take photographs?

That’s done in “post-processing” (PP)…..the original(s) are conservative…here is the original:

Thanks Linda. This is actually the Maumee river, its at one of the Islands, the river bends to the left at the top of the pic.
It looks totally different today-its all flooded, we’ve had 3 days of heavy rains. It might extend the walleye run-which would be good. ๐

So then each morning I am stuck rinsing out the sink and windexing my mirror all because I have two cats that like to wash their paws before they eat and they have to brush their teeth at the same time! Ohh! Look very closely in the mirror! Rambo sits there and is gaurding them while they are pulling their sneaky!
-
AnonymousMay 6, 2009 at 6:29 am
Thanks Ken, Cheryl and Perry! I was in my kitchen and had the bath water running still dressed while they were pulling their sneakies! When I got to the door I had to very quietly run and go grab the camera. When we first got our cats they were all abandoned kittens that we ended up taking in and adopting. Seems like once a year a newbie comes along. Every now and then I get lucky and find one a home. But before they get to roam in my house they have to get a flea bath. Bathing kittens is a challenge. You have to be dressed and get in the tub with them with clothes on so you won’t get clawed to death and reassure them it’s going to be okay. So now I have all these cats that love getting a bath except 2. If I leave my bathroom door open while bathing they come right on in and jump in the tub with me. LOL! Thinkiing it’s bath time. I got a bunch of big babies in my house that think they are all human. Gets funny catching them in the acts sometimes. There will be more of thing like these as time goes by.
But thank-you for the compliments. But Ken you alway’s get the most beautiful. I guess mine will be the comical~ Hugs

Nice shot Cheryl! What a great way to celebrate Memorial Day with something beautiful for our Veterans!
Ken! So you do the Ebay thing too! LOL! I have found some really good deals in Ebay. My husband and I both shop in that site! Gets really fun finding things.
I bought a bunch of nursery pot containers and even a green house in there. I do container gardening and finding the stuff in Ebay was much easier and cheper getting.
And I get alot of hard to find craft supplies in there. My husband buys stuff for his 68 Chevy ElCamino that he has been restoring for 5 years. Looks like he will get the car finished this year! -

Will do Ken! My husband came home one day with nothing but a old junky looking frame. The car had no motor or tranmission in it and was flat rotten tires. The frame was all rusty looking. This thing looked like a piece of junk. I was so embarrassed. LOL! First time I ever wanted to kill my husband. I told him he was not going to have that piece of junk in our yard for me to stare at everyday! So he moved it to my moms shelter in the back for my mom to stare at. Me and my mom both have gripped about that old junky thing. Then he started working on it! Buying piece here and piece there and sanding and priming and welding. My mouth dropped when I saw it for at first it looked horrible. Now it looks like a grey primmed car! All the dings are out and it’s nicely primmed. New enterior. New rims! He’s got a friend of his doing the paint job. But he’s getting parts for this guy and putting the parts on for his Elcamino. Both doing favors for each other. So both can finish their cars at the same time. He’s getting it painted red! Nobody in my area has a bright red one so his is going to stand out! I can’t wait to see it painted! LOL! He’s put quite a few grand in that car! The parts new are high! But will post a before and after on here soon! Hugs

Thank-you Ken!
Thank-you Cheryl!
Ken! I have a bunch of these Lillies!
I need to somehow get some strength to transplant them after they stop blooming. I guess a fall project for it’s way to hot now to be planting more flowers. I think we are going to have a hot one this year! Hugs

I’ve gotten a few fleeting shots of Cupcake over the past 8 years, but nothing that really showed how beautiful (in our eyes anyway) she is. Cupcake is Junior’s sister (Sweetie was their mother) and they are the last surviving ferals of the original colony.
This morning I saw Cupcake sitting out in the open for the first time in 8 years and I hoped she would stay there a moment while I ran for my camera, changed lenses, and then tried to get close enough to our glass doors before she saw me and dashed for cover.

Hey Ken~ She reminds me of my cat named Sweetie! Yep! I got a cat named Sweetie! I got a big family of cats at my house! LOL! Bootsie, Little Boy, Snowie, Sweetie, Huggiebear, Camino, Pumpkin, Rambo, Baby Girl, Snuggle Bums and Rosie Girl~
Thank God I have a Cat house in my back yard! We let one or two come in the house each week. But Andy and I see them everyday to feed them. But each needs that little special treatment. So each week we have two different ones in the house. And they are all spoiled~
What a beautiful photo of Cupcake~ Thanks for sharing
Hi Ken! How many cats do you have? They are beautiful! And you always get them to pose so nicely! Mine won’t stay still long enough! Except for bedtime when we are all sleeping~ Nice photo Ken~
Hugs
Linda H
Thanks Linda!
They are all feral and they come and go…..a few of them stay close. They don’t see me until I need them to look at the camera.

Hey Ken! Maybe I should set my cats free and let them go Feral! Then maybe I could get some nice shots huh? LOL! The way my cats are though which it has happened a few times where one would shoot out the door and we did not realize it!
They would come back to the door screaming MAMA MAMA! Let Me In! MEOWWWWW~ LOL! Hugs

So…..no cookies, or a jar. Instead it’s nutitional yeast on a plate…..
I thought the yeast was supposed to go INTO the cupcake.
But, this is Cupcake in the yeast…..and I couldn’t resist taking the shot!

Nice shot Ken! Looks like the wife there is enjoying her gardening. Which I would love to do. Got a garden growing but mine is a container garden. Much easier on me to handle right now. Andy had to take over though and will be attending it until I get better! Hugs

Hey Ken! We bought some of those topsy turvy tomato tree planters and I have been having some of the best tasting tomato sandwiches! Yum yum! This past spring I was rolling my fanny on the ground sliding all over the yard planting seeds! I have squash and zuchini planted in my flower beds! LOL!
Carrots in big 25 gallon buckets like the nurseries have. Bought a bunch of them on Ebay. I have strawberries for breakfast some mornings, free carrots, bell peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes. Not sure if my beets are going to do anything. Might have to replant them. But we are enjoying our fresh crop!
The taste is so much better! Next year I hope I can dig up more dirt and plant more! Hugs

Linda, about your beets, water them frequently, because the hormones on their outer seed-casings must be dissolved before they will sprout; that’s why it takes so long before they finally come up.
I also found a way to do some container gardening this year, though it does look funny to be sitting on a stool while raking, digging and planting.
All the best with your gardening! The only edibles I have to harvest so far are rhubarb, lettuce and chives. And thanks for all of your latest photos here, people. They’re beautiful!

I took this shot in February 2008, and just “found” it in a lunar eclipse folder…..I was about to delete it but thought it worth processing. A few days ago I was introduced to a long time local pro photographer that was with The University of the Pacific for 34 years – we looked at a few examples of each others’ work and he has asked to purchase a large print of this for his home (which made me very happy).

It’s been quite a while since I was in here due to a hectic summer with too nice weather to spend any time at my ‘puter, quite a lot of socializing and last Thursday celebrating hubby’s birthday. I thought I’d share the pretty roses I picked for him with y’all:

I’m doing well…..going to Burney Falls on Wednesday….get some photos before the park is closed due to the budget crisis in California!

I just got back from my excursion….had to see it before California has a new budget because this is one of the parks that will be closed when they do.
Between Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen is Burney Falls…..not the tallest waterfall in California but probably the most beautiful.
The hike down to the bottom is so easy…..it’s the hike back up (for me) that is the killer……(sob, sob). ๐

Neat Shots Ken!!! Love the frames!!!:)
This a.m. I found out all my thousands of pictures I have taken are all destroyed:mad: I hope everyone uses an external hard drive on your laptops and dvds or cds on your desk tops for all your pics. Its an experience I wouldn’t wish on anyone-losing irreplaceable pics like I did.
Keep those pics coming—I need pt(pic therapy) badly!!;)
Jim, I heard its been really hot and humid down your way–my parents were in your area last week. and they were out in jfitzens’ area last month with the same type of hot weather. We have had a weird summer here also-only 4 days of 90 weather vs or normal of 14 days. and its been cooler then normal most of the time-except this weekend its in the upper 80s to low 90s possibly. It figures it gets warmer when the kids have to go back to school, instead of staying in the 70s like it was.:(

“Tiny” who is very tiny had a male kitten we named “Inky”…… Gee, Tiny did look a bit fat for a while…..hmmmm. Then we saw a kitten in the backyard, and then we saw it with Tiny.
Inky was playing inside our door today with several old cat-toys we had……oh joy, a kitten!!
Shooting a black cat is a challenge……Presenting Inky

Nepenthe is a wonderful restaurant on top of this viewpoint…..I’ve been eating there since 1972.
You can visit their site where they have a Weather-Cam which shows a bit of the dining area and of course the view….
This day the air was clear of marine-layer, and luckily the sun was behind some clouds!

My daughter was visiting from Fort Lauderdale, so we went to Los Angeles, and stopped off in Hollywood for a while.
I thought my time with Jack Nicholson was great, but Steven Spielberg was a bore!

Inky has been spending more time at our house….. Today we went out to play croquet, and Inky wanted to play too!
First he wanted to be Goal-Keeper

Pretty soon he learned you have to put a ball through a wicket

Then we took a time-out while Inky got better aquainted with a croquet ball

Finally Inky was assigned to be Referee, and sat up on his judge’s seat

I spent a few days in Moab, Utah to shoot Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. The weather report said conditions were deteriorating (strong winds, clouds, rain) so I cut my visit short by one day and rushed to Canyonlands while there were some nice clouds.
I have much to look over and process, but I though this one would be a good start. Virtually all of my shots while there 5-shot HDR.

Howdy,
Ken, Love the HDR’s. you must have travelled quite a bit and probably have
quite the library of Photo’s. They are always gorgeous and well composed.
I love flickin through and seeing what you have posted.Wish I could do more landscape photography like you do. Every photo is basically a trip. I quess that why I cling to the birds.
Sorry about the Facebook thing. Hopefully your email is OK now. thanks Ken, tim -

I’ll keep doing landscapes while I can…….this last trip was very tiring.

It’s “Bud’s Frames” by Bud Guinn. There are several other actions by Bud….
http://www.atncentral.com/frames.htm
One problem I have is that some of the actions call for “brushes” that I don’t have…..so I can’t use them, especially the wood-grain types, and I have not taken the time to find out where I can get what I would need.
