Yes I had the nerve cut out of my calf to send to lab to see if there has been any demylatioin and remylation.

I agree it hurts like heck. I found that keeping up with pain meds and elevating my leg by lying on the couch with my leg proped up on back of couch helped with the throbbing.

It does get better with time, hang in there. :)
I agree with Rhonda. I had an ulnar nerve biopsy (right below the ankle) over 6 years ago and it hurt so bad!!!!!!! It still hurts now and it’s been 6 years!!! Worst part is that no amount of pain medication can take that nerve pain away! I’ve gotten to the point where the pain at the biopsy point was so bad that I asked if I could inject novicane right on the surgical spot. I get desperate sometimes. I really urge patients to leave biopsies as a last case scenario because this pain is lifelong. Lidocaine works sometimes, but not really. It just really sucks. I have never had a bone biopsy, but I have heard they are extremely painful. I can’t even imagine the type of pain that one has to be in for a bone biopsy to be considered. Going back to the Lidocaine, I can say that the patches work better than the creme. I dream of the day I can stay awake longer than 4 hours without needed a nap,and can walk, shower, dress or even sleep without pain.
Be well,
Florencia

It depends on why you are getting the biopsy done.

I had it done it can be very painful and then that part of your leg is numb forever.

For me it proved that I had both demylation and remylation happening.

This information was used when applying for disability.

Good luck,

I thought it was the Spine Tap and th Scope Signature on The EMG and Nerve Conduction tat determined it? My Dxhas not been questioned, except by me, yet IVIG an Steroids have Failed?

I Echo the Question; hat IfF they are “barkin up the rong tree?”

I was worried about getting a nerve biopsy after reading several negative reports on this forum. At the time, my condition was worsening, my NCV/EMG results were not typical of cidp, and I had zero response to a trial round of IVIG, which led to uncertainty about my diagnosis. The biopsy went fine, healed well, and helped confirm the cidp diagnosis and the decision to continue treatment. After three more months of IVIG at 2g/kg, my condition finally stabilized. So it was good that I had it done. By the way, I agree with the comment above that it is probably important to have the procedure performed by a doctor with acknowledged expertise in this area. I have been fortunate to have had very good medical care through the course of my illness.

Good luck,
Gary

Do me a favor and google nerve and muscle biopsy and read articles about these. I know that as of a couple of years they really do not recommend them. As muscle biopsy is more risky than a nerve biopsy. Can the do some other testing and go around this for a while before they do this if they think you do not have cidp? What else is he thinking it could be? Maybe do testing for that. Just be informed and then you will never regret your decision. God bless

I didn’t have a nerve biopsy. I have read on this site that they can leave you with permanant pain, others say not.

Another thing I have picked up is that not all biopsy’s are created and performed equally. Some only trust Mayo or certain centers of excellence to do it to ensure an accurate reading. I have read of varied results from contributers on this site.

In the end if you need the diagnostic criteria to get treatment, I would do it but recommend that you make sure you are having it done at the right place and examined by the right place.–tim–
