I am new here. tried to start a new thread today and sort of hogged in on lovemyford ..sorry. Anyway, my story is that I am three weeks into recovery and I think doing really well compared to some of the stories I have hear and read. I have moved from my walker to a cane and was felling really good on Saturday but Sunday was really bad. Is this roller coaster normal? How do you know what you can do or not do?

How do you know if you can do anything? Well, by trying! Also in the going from to and fro…use your mind carefully. Pace out walking, and waits [like at a check out] and back to vehicle and home. IF you get overtired at first? The next few steps are gonna be harder. Start out small, and venture further in time and length of what you do. Carefully map out: I’m gonna do this short thing – today; that thing- tomorrow and on… Build your strength and endurance up so that you mite just find that you could actually do 2-4 things in an outing. That includes doc appts too. The ‘UH-OH!’ moments can come up suddenly and always when there’s no one to help! Just regroup and slog on. You’d be surprised at what you can do if you must.
The roller coaster IS normal! Thus the pacing of what you, do ; when you do it, and how you do it. It’s a slow and dreary building-up process. But do keep notes, you mite be surprised if, after say 6 months? You are doing lots more than at the beginning. You won’t notice unless you keep stupid silly notes tho.
Keep at it! But never leave home w/o your cane! Can’t tell when you mite need it, and when you do? You will be grateful that you were so smart!

      Harry,
Are you in a rehab facility? You are fortunate to be improving as quickly as you are compared to some of the stories I see on this forum. Count your blessings and work hard at recovery.
I too have (am) recovering fairly quickly. Diagnosed 3/20. Home from rehab end of April, working again since 6/1. Still have difficulty with my foot / ankle muscles that cause me to walk very carefully but am improving slowly.
I too get the roller coaster effect. Some days are better than others and I really don’t know why. But, over time, those that know me best say I am making progress on the challenges I have left.
I think the biggest thing is, if you feel tired, rest. I find if I have a very physical day, such as a lot of walking, I am beat by the end of the day and only rest / sleep will get me going again. I don’t want to find out what will happen if I push myself too much and don’t rest.
In my case, I find I am more consistant if I stick to an exercise schedule. But, since going back to the working world, this is harder to keep up with.
So, listen to your body and keep plugging away. Sounds like your doing great!
