I’m 10 years post GBS I’m one of the 5% that never recovers I can move my head and arms I’m a bad if not worse case and I have a lot nerve pain, I’m taking 3000 mgs of neurontin a day now but I still have hand, leg and foot pain, anyone know how much neurontin I can take and is there anything else I can take for this type of pain and stay awake?

Consult your doctor. You are near the upper limits now as I recall. Also ask your doctor about a combination of drugs to deal with the pain. The other drug is an anti-depressant that seems to help some when used with your neurontin. But remember, do nothing until you speak with your doctor.

Yes by all means talk to your Dr. I take more than you do but it does mess with my level of alertness plus my memory. I’m only 18 months post-GBS but I’m trying to get down to your level. This being in a fog is getting real old. Good luck!

I take 3.6 g/day (900 mg x 4/day), but increasing beyond around 2.4 g/day doesn’t really seem to have had any appreciable benefit. I think this is the upper limit that most pain consultants are prepared to prescribe to.

Vicodin has always helped me and still does. But, like the others have said, check with your Dr. and tell him what you are experiencing. No one should have to go thru pain when there is all that medicine out there.
      Good Luck.

I live in a CNF a nursing home and I have their best Doctor that works in this place, most of the Doctors I have talked to, have never worked with many GBS cases so that’s why I read all of the forums to try and get a better idea of whats being used by other Doctors who may have more practice and results treating post GBS nerve pain, its not your average pain and average pain meds don’t always work, so if you could let me know what anti-depressent is used with neurontin you might help me and others beat some pain.
Thanks and I only do what the doc says is ok and he is always trying to learn from me as I try to learn from everyone.

There are a few anti-depressants, but first tell your doctor to consult with Dr. Steinberg at the Foundation. Let the doctor phone the Foundation and ask for Dr. Steinberg to return the call. He can ask him about your case and the mixture of drugs to deal with pain. Heavy pain killers like narcotics would be my last resort.
