Electrical Stimulation Therapy Using Russian Current

My Physical Therapist asked me if I ever had or knew about the above. It involves the use of pads on the muscle belly of the legs, etc., to prevent atrophy. I almost laughed when he said “Russian Current” but then realized it was a Russian team that did the experiments. The Google search revealed some info but it was garbled in translation. Can anyone shed some light on this subject?
