Denied SS Disability

This is not new news for many of us on this forum. I was denied disability stating I can still sit, bend, walk enough to work. How do we get the fatigue issue upfront? I did the filing on my own, and am now waiting to see if an attorney will take my case on. I will file for an appeal no matter what.
Ugh…

dang it I was hoping you would get it! They don’t care about the fatigue part of things, I tried emphasizing that and they didn’t seem to understand even though I explained if I go to the store, that is ALL I do for the day because it wears me out. If I clean the house, that is ALL I do for the day because it wears me out. Tried explaining I only have so much energy to use each day and that it varies day to day, if i over do something I am in bed for several days. They wrote back and said since I can sit (which I can not sit very long in one position….I change positions into some odd ones that even a Yogi master would not attempt….and if i sit too long I am down for several days in pain), I can use my arms, even if they tire easily and I can barely lift a gallon of milk let alone the “20 to 50 pounds” most employers expect. I can walk and they said that since i can walk I am okay. WTH? I am praying that tomorrows appt with the neuro goes my way with all of this because lawyers read this type of stuff and won’t touch you because there is nothing in it for them. They see it as a lost cause. I wish you luck and hope like heck you are approved. Hugs and I am sorry to hear the latest news ๐

I also get very tired. I also have swelling in my legs and have to lie on couch with feet in the air to help reduce pain and swelling.
What about meds? I can’t function after IVIG and I go once a month so for the next several days I am in bed.
Can’t type because of pain in hands.
Can’t sit long pain in back.
Make sure you write down every little pain or ache.
Good luck with the appeal.

Jason, I quit my job in 2008 and haven’t had any insurance since. I tried to get it on my own but Blue Cross denied me because of my history with GBS.
Rhonda, With no insurance I am on limited meds – only amitryptiline. I did submit my notes of every little ache and pain.
Until I can get a good round of tests done (EMG/NCV etc.), I don’t think anyone will look at me twice.
I am waiting on a lawyer that I contacted to see if she will take my case. In the meantime, I’m having to keep looking for a job that I think I can handle without losing it – as what happened to the last two short time jobs I’ve had the past two years. I’m overqualified for receptionist type positions but that is what I think I can handle. I used to be an executive assistant for a country club (they had stairs and 90,000 sq. feet I had to get around in).
Thank God one of my sisters is helping me keep a roof over my head. I’ll be 53 in a couple of weeks and I know age is not helping me with my health or finding a job.
Thank you all on this forum for being there for me!

I’m waiting to hear from an attorney to see if she will take my case… not putting much hope into that. I’m back to pounding the streets for a job. This is how it has been since 1997 for me and I suppose I will just have to continue this until I die – back into the denial stage. I’ve got an interview tomorrow that I’m hoping will be a low stress environment because the job could be awesome with good pay and benefits! Its for an Executive Administrative Coordinator for a family outpatient drug treatment center. I am going to walk in with my cane! Maybe I can get counseling while I work there?!?!
Another confusing day… but the weather is so beautiful I can’t help but thank God for this day – hopefully without earthquakes ๐ฎ

Chrissy,
What about jobs where you can work from home? I saw an ad for a medical bill coding specialist where you can do it all from home. Just a thought. My husband does computer work full-time from home and has for years. I am fortunate enough to work on my laptop once in a while at home. Good luck with the job or the SSD, whichever works out for you.

Life is amazing with all of its turns… I had been on a waiting list at a free clinic for counseling. I got a call yesterday and went 2 hours later for this counseling. This is a church place with a big community center and the docs are all volunteers. I met this most precious older woman with a PhD… long story short, I go next Wednesday to see a neurosurgeon that she set up an appointment for me. She was aware that a spinal tap is needed to diagnose things – I wonder if this is the way to diagnose CIDP? I am so excited and grateful!!! This will not cost me anything ๐
She also gave me a lawyer place to do more on my SS filing and bankruptcy – I believe that will be very low cost if any at all. I will call them Monday. I will also see this counselor in two weeks and she recommended a ‘revovery’ group for me to attend which I will do starting next Thursday – for free.
I had started a temp job yesterday but left at noon and called the temp agency telling them I won’t go back. It was not an environment for me at all as I couldn’t speak and the work was very complex. (I don’t think I could do the medical billing stuff from home as you have to learn coding and stuff.)
So if I hadn’t left that temp job, I wouldn’t have received the call to go to counseling right away and meet this ‘angel’ counselor. My birthday is next Tuesday and this all is the best present from the Universe that I could have ever received.
I was so wound up yesterday and got to sleep in today with thunderstorms – the best sleep ever, oh and 12 hours of it!

My first try For SS I did my self and was declined. I hired an attorney after that in about a year I was accept by SS. In the hearing I stated I was trying to work full time but couldn’t. I had FMLA on file with employer and also said I took extra breaks. Which I did employer never knew a big company. The doctor wrote a good explantion of my medical history. Just keep trying and have faith it will come.

Thank you Alma for the BD wishes! I had a blast yesterday but am really paying for it today.
I just saw a neuro today (at a free clinic) and he was so very wonderful with his exam and explaining. I still (and probably wont ever) have any reflexes. The doc told me to keep using a cane. My left side is worse than my right as I could not feel the tuning fork or pin ***** at all on my left foot. I was very surprised when he said the nerve damage I have is pretty severe and none of this will change – only get worse as I age. I’m now 53 and my body is probably 10 years older. I am also having memory issues and such which is all related to being older – really sucks! In my mind, I am still 27. He understood my fatigue issue.
One thing he did diagnose me with that is new is lymphedema as my feet and ankles get very swollen. He instructed me to always wear compression socks. Also diuretics will not help this at all. He also said what the painful ice cold feet at night condition is called but I cannot remember it. I may call the clinic and ask them to look at my chart. But there is nothing to help this.
I cannot use his information officially for SS… but will keep on trying!!! I’m waiting to get an appointment with a low income legal aid place to review my SS case and bankruptcy filing. One attorney I called never called me back. I know I don’t have enough documentation but am keeping the faith I will eventually get SS (hopefully before 65 *lol*).
I’ve been venting here for many, many years and want to support everyone in our GBS family. You all are priceless to me ๐
Blessings to all!

No call from an attorney yet so I filed an appeal on my own. SS called and did want the information from where I had gone this week. I told the lady that I have no reflexes and the doc they sent me to barely checked only one spot. She also added the lymph edema and noted fatigue comes with that.
So it is with renewed hope that I post this! Thank you all for hanging in there with me ๐

Age is a big factor as well when it comes to applying for SSD, as the govt.considers most people over 50 unemployable if they are looking for new employment. Try getting it on your own first, as a lawyer will take around $5,000 of what you are entitled to, a lot of money if it is as all possible to get it on your own. Good luck…

Chrissy,
When my friend in Tampa had a major heart attack, etc he had a hard time getting SSI -until he got a lawyer The lawyer took a small percentage….so it was quite reasonable. Yet where I am currently living in Pennsylvania, I learned that a former student of mine got it immediately on her own and she has Fibromyalgia. I was amazed how quickly and easily she got SSI. Someone said that it might be the state where you live. What is sad is that she consumes HUGE amounts of sugar….drinks, cupcakes, etc. I would bet $100 that she would be better if she cut out the sugar – which is highly inflammatory to the body (but oh so yummy!) Not one of the specialists she went to asked her about what she was eating – figures. But I could not talk her into giving up half the sugar for 5 days. So..at 45 she doesn’t have to work anymore. Your case seems certainly more deserving of SSI – GBSers did not cause this….and giving up sugar doesn’t change our diagnosis and residuals. I wish you well – you deserve to get it. -
Best of luck to you Chrissy! I hope everything turns out well for you. ๐
