Modafinil 400 mg is an ultra high dose of modafinil which is a medication used in promoting wakefulness in adult patients suffering from excessive sleepiness. The drug is mostly prescribed to patients with sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with persistent daytime sleepiness and shift work sleep disorder (SWSD). Modafinil does not act on the causes of the mentioned sleep disorders but promotes alertness and improves daytime functioning.
The mechanism of action of modafinil entails the interaction of the substance with several neurotransmitter systems in the brain associated with the regulation of the sleep-wake cycle. Even though the mechanisms of action are not fully understood, modafinil affects neurotransmitters responsible for alertness. Contrary to stimulants, modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting agent whose purpose is to improve the state of the patient allowing him/her to remain alert during the day.
In the case of people who suffer from narcolepsy, modafinil works by reducing the incidence of sleepiness during the day and enabling them to stay alert and awake at their workplaces and other daily activities. Modafinil is used for people suffering from obstructive sleep apnea in situations where even after successful treatment of airway obstruction through means like continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), the person remains drowsy and sleepy during the day. It can be used in the case of shift work sleep disorder as well.
