Help! I am seeking a way to assist my sister with communication. Currently she is only able to nod her head, good eye movement, and the ability to mouth words. However, due to her lack of muscle control, etc when she mouths words it is hard to discern what she is saying. I have made her a letter chart but it is not working as I had intended. Also, her eye sight is blurry at times.  Anyone out there have any helpful hints or a better way to utilize a letter chart ( making it bigger?) I am open to any and all suggestions. My sister is a 47 yr old on the vent, trach’d, and has been in the hospital since January 25th and ventilated since February 10th.

Is there an occupational therapist at the hospital? An OT should be able to give you expert help. Or perhaps a speech therapist.

Parry and Steinberg suggest communication cards which cover common situations and which work with “yes” or “no” responses. Doing everything letter-by-letter is too cumbersome for an extended time.
