Unable to bend fingers

My husband came down with a very severe case of GBS in 2016. Nine years later, he is still in a wheelchair but fortunately, he can breathe on his own, feed himself and do a lot of other daily tasks. However, he has never been able to regain the use of his hands properly. He has gone through several years of both OT and PT but unsuccessful is getting his fingers to bend, which prevents him from gripping things like a pen, a fork and drops things very frequently. Is anyone else experiencing this?

My father was diagnosed with GBS in 2013 and for years he couldn’t bend his fingers or grip objects. He had to undergo rigorous therapy specifically for the hands. With time he was able to grip objects like a pen, fork, walking stick etc. Now, twelve years later he is able to write using a pen, he walks with the help of a walking stick and chops veggies for salad like a pro.
I believe the key is to be consistent with the exercises and hand movements.
