Posting Links

I notice it now says on the main page that due to complaints we are no longer allowed to post any links. I was someone who used to report the spam that we always get prescription drugs, porn etc etc. so in effect I was a complaintant. Ironic.
We the main users never had any problem reporting inapropriate things, so it seems to me that because those porn spammers came and were reported by us, we can no longer post links. So in effect we are fixing a problem that never existed. All we ever needed was an admin to take care of things when we needed them.
This is the last I will say about this, but posting links to information is an important part of the support that us fellow GBS’ers provide. Using the search function of this forum, new users can search and find links and topics we have posted and discussed before. What we needed all along was a moderator we could report issues too and have them addressed, not a forum censor.
I think you guys should reconsider and allow us to alert a moderator when needed, not have our posts censored when they don’t need to be.
Have a nice weekend everyone.

jerimy,
i agree 100% w you. i even went so far as to tell admin that the non-link posts that needed deleting were not being deleted & that if they were paying for that service it was not being provided. i also requested that, if these posts were not going to be deleted by design, that they let me know so that i could stop wasting my time reporting them. i received no reply. different strokes [no pun intended] for different folks. take care. be well.

I too would report the spammers by clicking the red ‘yeild’ sign on the top right of the post, and just writing the word ‘solicitation’ – but nothing more. The admin would normally take care of it. It is a real pity we cannot make things easier for members by posting relevant links that they can just click on, instead of trying to copy and past them. A pity that some individuals have made our lives a little harder.

Hello,
Sorry I didn’t chime in earlier.
You can still post links if you copy and paste them. We can no longer post a direct link. Reason being is the risk. We were hacked into thru a direct link. This cost 10s of thousands of dollars to fix and set up again. Not to mention the lost time and information. We have a new IT and this should not happen again.
The Foundation has given us this forum to share each others experiance, ?s, and hopefully, solutions. We have been trying to stay on top of this with all of us helping and the office too. But still links that offend others and put this site at risk are still missed. Copy and Paste is the best solution. Yes it takes more of our time but this is what has to happen from here on out.
The GBS/CIDP Foundation is run on donations. With all that has happened in the world and with the IVIG products donations are low right now. We have hired new people to work on the site and rebuild it. They have a big responsability to answer and direct 150-200 e-mails a day.
This site is for us and I thank God it’s here. It has changed my life and we all know how many others it has helped.
OK now be nice when giving it back to me.;)

So Kass then if I understand you correctly it would be ok to post this:
gbs-cidp.org/forums
but not
[URL=”http://www.gbs-cidp.org/forums”%5D%5BB%5Dwww.gbs-cidp.org/forums%5B/B%5D%5B/URL%5D
or
[URL=”http://www.gbs-cidp.org/forums”][B]http://www.gbs-cidp.org/forums[/B][/URL]
is that correct????
Jer
[I]Ps-Seems that they have made it so you can’t make a hyperlink anyway, thats why you see the url tags around the bottom two.[/I]

hi kass,
there is nothing to give back to you. you are a saint. i have never gotten a reply i’ve sent to gbsfi except from you. this is not a put down of gbsfi. in other matters they have done wonders. maybe they do not understand the technology & IT is walking over them.
all you say is true. i, too, am grateful for this site. none finer. my point is that if the site provides a means to report spam, they should follow up on their own procedure. we’re not asking for anything they did not request us to do. take care. be well.

Thank you Gene. If you are not getting any ?s answered that is a huge problem. Is this still true since the new forums started?
Jer you know what a dummy I am when it comes to PCs. I will double check on this but to my understanding we can not put up direct links. Some how these links once sent can be returned to our site and infect it. Sound right?
The office is closed now and I’ll be at the zoo all day on Tues. (with a 2 year old and 3 7year olds. Anyone care to join me?!):eek:
Any one with any ?s please post them here and I’ll get the answers.

hi kass,
first i should clarify. it is my emails that have never, ever been replied to. recently i was told that i should phon instead of eeing. so i guess it is more a matter of communication. i’m not into phon calls & they’re not into ees.
if you could find out if anyone looks at reported posts & how long they take to respond [delete them], it would be nice.
i followed 2 posts i reported for quite some time & they were not deleted, so i gave up tracking assuming all my reports went not-acted-on. just tried to find them, but the search command does not work properly so i don’t know what is at fault. i wonder if these recent posts hilighting this prob is making someone more alert?
take care. be well.

Gene,
It seems that they believe a link is what somehow caused the forum to get hacked. Not sure how this would happen unless some kind of executable was triggered by the link. Seems like the server would be protected from anything being ran via firewall and antivirus and admin restrictions. I think not allowing links has reduced the amount of help we can offer others. I think we really need to push for them to allow at least posters who attain a certain number of posts to be allowed to post links. Most of these forums assign a rank based on number of posts anyway. Every time we get a new CIDP/GBS’er we are supposed to get in the chat room and give them the links to social security help, prescription assistance, CIDP USA etc etc. which is unlikely.
