My mother keeps battling nausea (3 months post GBS) and throws up almost everyday. Did anyone else experience this problem?

Thanks so much for all your responses! I relay all the information to my mother each night…she already feels like she is not alone in this madness…and in actuality i have gathered more information from this forum than from any of the doctors…they should join…! hahah

Karen, I think drs should join as well, who knows what new ideas they would walk away with. I’m sorry your Mom has been having such a rough time with nausea. Has she mentioned this to her drs? if not, then she should, especially with the vomitting. I have nausea occassionally, not anything to concern me though. Ginger, fresh or in oil form is good if she can’t take a nausea medication. I use fresh lemons in filtered water, small sips throughout the day, it helps somewhat. and those frozen italian ices are good for nausea also. I hope she gets over it quickly. Please don’t let it go on, it could cause more problems for her. Give Mom big hugs for me and please take care of yourself also.

      Hi Karen,
I too battle nausea constantly, since it hit my digestive system, and the nerves controlling the stomach no longer work, and pills must be used to “dump” the stomach.
I am allergic to the anti-nausea class of drugs, “Phenothiazines”, which include Compazine and Phenergan, the most common anti-naisea drugs.
So, I use Tigan, which helps me greatly, and when that doesn’t work, I use Zofran, which is used for people who get nausea from Chemotherapy.
      Hope this might help,
      Kedaso

Sometimes the medications we take can get to our digestive system after a long period of time and there is nothing worse than nasuea/vomitting.

I had this hit me in rehab. The doctor prescribed something called Protonix and I was better in 24 hours. Now, I recommend that the doctor check her out and make sure there isn’t something else going on (ulcer, virus, etc..). Most GBS’ers tend to look at GBS being the root cause of all there ailments. Sometimes this is not the case. You have to make sure you are always looking outside the “GBS box” when it comes to new complaints.

I hope she starts feeling better.

Ben was on Protonix for a few months after GBS, but I never knew what Protonix was used for. I guess it helped because nausea was never even an issue for him!

There is always the good old fashion standby, flat gingerale and dry crackers.

I would consult the Dr on this matter.

Frank had nausea only in the very first few months.

      Karen,

I am still battling with nausea 3 years on from GBS but don’t be alarmed by this. I have been functioning with medication quite well for this time. I have tried various medications and found one that worked well only to find that the side effects long term were no good and i had to stop taking it. (It was Largactil – Chlorpromazine) So now I am back to looking for a new remedy. Don’t let your mum know that I still have the nausea for this long time as it may get her down. I am telling you this as many doctors wont associate the nausea with GBS and you need to find something to bring it under control now as it will help with her overall recovery if she is not feeling sick. It is terrible to feel this way and I sympathise with her. I have a good specialist who agrees that the nausea is part of the GBS and is trying to help me through it.

Good luck to your mum and good luck to you also.

      Kind Regards,
      Debbie

      Hi Karen,
Sorry I didn’t post on this earlier but i havn’t been keeping up with things too well here lately..fatigue being an issue of course. Anway, nausea…oh my..I threw up every night for over a year after being diagnosed with gbs. I would lay down and as soon as i fell asleep i would start throwing up. What we finally decided was this..the muscles in the esophagus and the stomach were weakened with the gbs and the nerves that control them were damaged, while awake they were strong enough to control things but as soon as i fell asleep everything relaxed to the point that it let go..and therefore vomit..i was so exhausted because i wasn’t getting any sleep and i was soooo sick. this happened regardless of what position i was sleeping in, sitting up or lying down. my doctor put me on nexium and it is the only thing that helped but didn’t actually stop it. finally after over a year i don’t throw up at night anymore..i do still have problems with acid and i have a hiatal hernia and the nexium controlled all of those symptoms but unfortunately i cannot afford to buy my medication anymore and my doctor doesn’t get samples.. anyway, don’t let anyone tell you that vomitting is not associated with gbs because i would have to say that it is..

I didn’t vomit often but oh the nausea! I always felt like if I could “just vomit” I would feel better. To this day I often will be nauseas if tired. I find ginger tea to be of help.

here is what i was told to try for nausea—–Please ask your dr before trying any meds!!!! ginger is very good for nausea-in any form-liquid, raw, ale, dried, oil. lemon is good for nausea-any form also, i drank fresh lemon water or lemon icees(with strawberry). when i had severe nausea with my pregnancies(both, lasted the whole nine months) i was put on otc sleeping pills along with vitamin b6—make sure you ask your dr if you should take this!! i had been prescribed everything under the sun for nausea-tigan(no longer available after May 07), reglan, thorazine, compazine, phenergan, and zofran and more that i can’t think of right off. since i was on these meds at one time or another, for soo long, i can no longer take them-i developed allergies to them-some severe neurological ones. now the only thing i use for my occassional nausea is the lemon water. hope your mom finds something that will help, as with everything its trial and error with nausea remedies. take care.
