I have heard of GBS being triggered by surgeries. Not common, but it does occur. I would talk to your Nuerologist and make sure everyone has knowledge of your GBS.

Did an Oil change on the car for the 1st time in a year. May sound pety but it was kind of a big deal for me. It was 6 months before I could button my pants so it;s kind of good to be getting back to some what normal tasks that I used to do. It took me about an hour or so with some setbacks but we I got it done.

Just hope my GBS hands tightened Oil Pan and filter good enough.:)

You are right this is a big deal that will hopefully bring some attention to GBS. Campylobacter jejuni is most likely the culprit, but 24 cases in the desert should raise some eyebrows. 24 people w GBS in a year is what would be expected in a city of 1.5M to have this happen in a couple weeks is a real concern.

I am almost 10 months into this and have no problems driving short or long distances. I asked the exact same questions after 6 weeks (you can look up my posts). What I can say is start small but whatever he can do for himself will be a big boost in self confidence. Maybe driving to therapy, the post office, a drive through.

Certaily if he wants to do a road trip you may need to step in but if he can let him do it. If you both have cell phones all the better, or give him a number to reach a friend or relative I case he gets stuck.

I got my keys stuck in my pocket once took me a half hour to figure it out.:o But I got it and that is what counts.

I’ve heard 6 months from medical professionals as the time where you get “the most” back. From others I’ve heard up to 3 years. From what I can determine I really don’t think any one knows…The way I look at is if you have the ability to move a certain part of you body you can start to gain function. Strength/dexterity may take a while but as long as you are working the areas that need improvement you WILL see improvement. I like to believe we are a constant work in progress.

That is an awesome fish. Not sure my biceps are up handling a brute like that. I am going to Kentucky lake next nweek for a long overdue vacation. Last week I tried some casting and I am pretty good with spinning tackle although using a baitcast reel is stilll pretty rough with weak wrists and all. Even so I am going to make sure I get out more than a few times.

If you don’t hear from me you will know I hooked a big catfish and he won the battle and pulled me down the river:D

She is very lucky to have you there. Progress is slow but keep focused and things do get better. Learn to think in terms of months and not days celebrate every improvement. I am 10 month in and back to doing most normal things but still have a ways to go.

    Take care!!

I did not get my GBS from a Flu shot but my Dr. has advised me to stay away from it as well as the Pneumonia shot. He stated when you become 70-80 and the effects of the flu or the like tend to have more complications then you might want to reconsider. I figured I made it 30 yrs before I ever got my 1st flu shot….No plans on getting one in the future.

I think there is a lot more to learn about all these “precautionary measures” we are asking everyone to take.

I’ve heard to stay away from them if at all possible. There have been some previous posts on the subject i believe

    good luck

Got off my butt and took the boat out with my wife today. We are going on vacation and wanted to make sure everything was still OK. Launching and putting it banck on the trailer was a little different than before but no big problems. I could have done it solo but it was really cool for my wife and I to get out and run up and down the lake for an hour and a half or so. It’s something we have done for along time and really cool to get back to some sort of normal.

Next week hoping to do some fishing 9 months post GBS. Even those small ones are going to be really special.

I need to figure how to post some pictures

Things may not be perfect but it’s important to share and keep the positive posts going. It’s been 9 months for me and still a wys to go but along way from where I was at. Thnk im gonna get the boat out of the garage and on the water for the 1st time in 9 months this weekend.

Just gotta get the motivation up:)

Hang in there this is a long and slow journey but things can and almost always do get better. Learn to think of improvements in months as opposed to days or weeks and you will see the gains.

PT/OT sound like they are pretty good. Exercise is important to build stength but not to the point exhaustion. At the same time being in active can be a problem so there is a real balance here that needs to be achieved. My advice try to get back to things that are normal for your family in short increments.

As for the beer go ahead in moderation all is good.:)
