Hello:

Has anybody heard or know about Lorenzo’s Oil.
I’ve been told about the movie which is a true story of a kid with adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD).

I’m just starting to read about it, I found they have a foundation and also The Myelin Project.

But my real question is if anybody knows if olive oil and rapeseed oil would help at all in myelin repair?

Thank you
Horacio

Dear Haracio:

During the first few months after the active stage of GBS, it is recommended to eat a diet which is slightly higher in fat. It is believed this aids the regeneration of damaged myelin cells. Since oils contain fat, it may provide some minimal benefit. I have asked several doctors about this, and there is a consensus that once a myelin cell dies, it will not be replaced or regenerated. Eating myelin compounds or oils will not alter that fact.

There’s a PDF available at the UK about GBS and diet.

Specifically, it mentions
An anti-inflammatory diet is recommended, containing many essential fatty acids, known as
‘EFAs’, found in oily fish, nuts, seeds and their oils and olive oil. The two families of essential
fats are Omega 3 and Omega 6. These fats are necessary for the integrity of the myelin sheath
that surrounds the nerves (Neuro epidemiology 1992: 11:214-25).
