Hello all, I’m new here, and I joined because on April 24th my stepdad, Brent, was diagnosed with GBS. He’s a truck driver and he was having some problems with his hans and feet and some other stuff , went to the doctor and they thought his symptoms were that of carbon monoxide poisoning he could be getting from his truck, so they gave him a shot of penicillin or something and ran tests for it and sent him home. He then took off on the truck from here in Nebraska, and by the time he got to California he was shaking, and losing control of basic functions. he admitted himself into a hospital on a Sunday night and by Tuesday they had the tests back that confirmed what they had thought- GBS.
My mom flew out there to be with him and had no idea how idea how long she was going to be there, not having known what it was yet, so she only packed for a few days and slept on a bench in the hospital courtyard for the first few nights as he was in ICU for the first 6 days. She has since met some friendly church people that have been helping her out alot.
Brent had lost all functions fast and about 3 days after treatment started, he was recovering at great measures! He is now in a rehabilitation hospital there and will be a few weeks there before he will be able to come back to Nebraska.
I was just wondering if any of you have some words of support to share with a newbie to this GBS, he has lots of time and not alot of company all the way over there, maybe a card or just a note of experience would be a good thing to share with him. They don’t have a computer there to look up all the facts, or read all the stories I’ve been able to read since hearing of this syndrome.
I hope some of you will find it in your hearts to reach out to him and my Mom and share a little with them, I know they will appreciate it!!

Hi Sally,
How wonderful that you found this forum for your stepfather.
Please tell him that although it was probably scary to get so bad so fast, it was also probably a good sign because it means his diagnosis of GBS is likely correct. His rapid recovery is great too. When he’s ready, please tell him to contact us with any questions he may have as he recovers.
Best wishes,
Suzanne
