they are likely testing to see how much oxygen vs. carbon dioxide is in your blood stream which can indicate breathing difficulties – for example I had a very difficult time breathing, my O2 level was about 90% which is not horrible but not great either so they gave me supplemental O2 but my CO2 level was normal so that indicated that I was not having trouble expelling waste gases so I didn’t need the assistance of a ventilator
