Objective To evaluate the efficacy of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). Background Evidence is growing that MMF is effective as an immunomodulatory drug in neuromuscular diseases. Methods A database of 184 patients with CIDP was analysed to obtain clinical, laboratory and electrophysiological information for patients with CIDP treated with MMF. Results Eight patients, who met the inclusion criteria, received MMF (mean dose 2 g/day; median duration 15.2 months). The average Neuropathy Impairment Score of the eight patients improved from baseline (72.3+/-35) after initiation of MMF therapy (37.8+/-37; p<0.001). Six of these eight patients were either able to stop concomitant medications (corticosteroid, intravenous immunoglobulin) or reduce their doses and frequency by >/=50%. Conclusions Our pilot data suggest that MMF appears to be an effective therapy for patients with naive or refractory CIDP, and further controlled studies are warranted for their confirmation.

Hi Rocky, Is mycofenilate moffitel cell cept? I think so but not sure? It was used alot in the past, Our doc suggested we try it 2 years ago but I refused as the ivig was working but most importantly there were no studies for children it was not reccomended that children take it. Just passing tis info on from the 2008 symposium, (your study is more recent, published date 2010) so things may have changed since then, but at that time they were stating that cell cept causes cns involvement when taken? If mycofenalate moffitel is cell cept, it kind of makes you wonder what we should believe, these studies going back and forth are a little un-nerving. I am going to look up if they are the same, if so, I will leave the post, if not I will delete it!! Thanks for the info!!

Rocky,
They are the same. It makes me so nervous to think one set of docs says one thing others another. How are we supposed to figure things out? Maybe they just changed their mind since 2008, did it mention anything about a revission?
Thanks!

maybe the operative word in the report is “refractory” … as in … if all else fails, the MMF has had good results.
