Hospital appeal is clear winner
Work has finished on a treatment centre for sufferers of a rare condition at the Royal Preston Hospital, thanks to a fundraising initiative which raised £100,000.
The Glasshouse Appeal was started by David Nuttall in 2003 to raise money for a specialist treatment centre for people with Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Poly-neuropathy and other neuromuscular conditions.

The appeal was spearheaded by CIDP sufferer David Nuttall.
A decade ago, the 43-year-old father-of-three from Little Eccleston, near Preston, started to suffer stiffness and pain in his back which led to problems when he was walking.

David said: “I would be walking when all of a sudden, my knees would collapse and I would almost fall. On one occasion, I was walking when I suddenly froze and felt totally stuck.”

Hospital tests found he had nerve damage caused by CIPD.
His condition has deteriorated and he now receives regular intravenous treatment at the Royal Preston Hospital.

The aim of the Glasshouse Appeal was for the clinic to be built as a glass annex on the ward where people with the condition are treated.

The centre is now officially open and will provide outpatients with neuromuscular conditions in a facility where they can receive regular, tailored intravenous treatment, detailed assessments, advice on healthy living and physiotherapy techniques.

There will also be specialist nursing care and the creation of a recognised Centre of Excellence in Lancashire.

Samantha Crayston, neuromuscular nurse specialist at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are so grateful to David and his fundraising team for their unbelievable efforts in raising this huge amount of money.

“Thanks to them people with neuromuscular conditions, such as CIDP, will now have a treatment centre that is specifically designed to meet their needs.”
