Hearing

Sue,
I experienced sudden loss of hearing in one ear several years ago (long before my neuro problems). I was put on Prednisone and it worked to restore my hearing, I’d say to about 95% of normal. I only notice a difference when using the phone — the affected ear sounds a tiny bit muffled. I think I was on it for 2 or 3 weeks, and weaned off without any problems. It did make me a bit jittery for the first day or two, but I didn’t gain weight from such a short-term usage.

Hope all goes well for you too,
Caryn

I have actually seen research in the Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine mentioning the opposite, that GBS almost never affects hearing.

Now, please take this with a grain of salt since, to begin with, GBS is very rare, and I have come to question the overall “institutional knowledge base” of the disease with so little research having been completed to date, and the research that has been done having to be limited in scope. I often think I learn much more from the experience of people in this forum than I do from any physicians.

My summary is that GBS seems to be so “individualized” that I would not be comfortable in ruling out any symptom by and of itself (i.e. hearing loss). Best wishes for some better answers.
