Firefall at Yosemite’s El Capitan’s Horsetail Falls

In late February for a few days the setting sun lights up the diminutive Horsetail Falls of El Capitan and creates a spectacular light show. I know of photographers that tried for several years (one I know took 5 years) before the weather was right and enough water was flowing from the falls! I was very lucky indeed to get this the first time I went.

There are several places/viewpoints to get this shot. I was on a small outcropping in the Merced River….along with 14 other photographers! We had to come down a very slick, icy, snowy river bank in freezing temperatures and I stood there for nearly three hours! Up on the bank were perhaps another 15 photographers, and this was just this one spot…..
